Furiosa & Garfield Battle For Box Office Dominance In Disappointing Memorial Day Weekend

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

Summary Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Garfield Movie are both in contention for No. 1 at the domestic box office over Memorial Day weekend.

Furiosa's Saturday projections show it reaching between $31 and $33 million while Garfield's show $30 to $32 million.

Whichever movie takes No. 1, it is possible that it will be the worst gross to top the holiday weekend chart in more than four decades.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Garfield Movie are vying for dominance at the domestic box office during an underwhelming Memorial Day holiday weekend. Garfield, which stars Chris Pratt as the voice of the titular cat, is a new animated movie that already opened in international theaters at the beginning of May and has so far earned more than $45 million overseas. In contrast, the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga release is kicking off worldwide this weekend, bringing the prequel to theaters nine years after the release of the previous installment, Fury Road.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday, Furiosa is projected to end its opening weekend with a domestic gross somewhere between $31 and $33 million. Considering the fact that Garfield's Saturday projections show it landing between $30 and $32 million by the end of the holiday weekend, it's possible that either movie could take the top spot by the time Memorial Day is over. However, if neither title can beat $33 million, that will still mark a disappointing Memorial Day weekend, as modern blockbuster tentpoles typically perform considerably better during the holiday frame.

More to come...
