One Piece's live-action success can ensure future seasons and spinoffs, expanding on the rich world created by Eiichiro Oda.

Live-action One Piece spinoffs are now much more likely following the astonishing success of Netflix’s adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga. With over 1100 manga chapters and counting, One Piece is one of the most successful and influential fictional sagas of all time. The franchise, which also includes a 25-year-old anime series that is still airing, expanded into live-action territory for the first time in 2023 with Netflix’s One Piece season 1, widely considered the best live-action anime adaptation to come out of Hollywood.

One Piece was renewed for season 2 shortly after the release of the first season, which confirmed how successful the show had been. Now, following Netflix’s What We Watched report for the second half of 2023, the popularity of One Piece live-action has become even clearer. Even though One Piece has been massive for years, what the live-action show accomplished on Netflix cannot be taken for granted and bodes well for the future of the franchise.

ONE PIECE: Season 1, the first season of Netflix’s live-action One Piece, was the streamer’s biggest show from July to December 2023 with over 71 million views. One Piece season 1 was watched for over 541 million hours, more than twice as many as Netflix’s second biggest show of the same period, Dear Child. Using either "hours viewed" or "views" as the parameter, One Piece was significantly bigger for Netflix than titles like Who Is Erin Carter, Lupin: Part 3, The Witcher season 3, and Sex Education: Season 4, all of which were very successful for the streamer in 2023.

According to Netflix, "Views" represent the total hours viewed divided by the runtime.

Even when compared to shows that have been available on the platform for a while, One Piece was still one of Netflix’s most successful shows of 2023. For example, Wednesday season 1, which premiered in 2022, received 98 million views in 2023. The Witcher, whose first season debuted in 2019, had 76 million views in 2023 considering not only the third season but the show as a whole. One Piece’s 71 million views in 2023 is a particularly impressive number when compared to other Netflix hits, having even performed better than series like The Crown and Virgin River in 2023.

One Piece's Success Makes Many More Seasons & Spinoffs Look Likely

One Piece’s future at Netflix is all but guaranteed

One Piece’s success on Netflix is great news for the show for more than just one reason. Firstly, it indicates a positive, steady future for the live-action series on the platform. For Netflix’s One Piece to even come close to catching up with the anime, it will need several seasons, which is something even critically acclaimed series end up not receiving. Secondly, it guarantees that One Piece will continue to be given the budget and the creative freedom it needs to adapt Eiichiro Oda’s epic, which has been releasing chapters non-stop since 1997.

One Piece's story begins way before Luffy sets sail to become King of the Pirates and hides many secrets that not even the manga has unveiled yet.

Lastly, One Piece’s impressive streaming numbers make future live-action spinoffs look likely. Although there has never been a proper One Piece spinoff other than light novels and filler movies, Netflix’s approach toward its most successful shows indicates that Luffy’s journey into the Grand Line could be expanded into a franchise. For example, The Witcher received a live-action spinoff in addition to two animated movies; Virgin River is getting a prequel; a Wednesday spinoff has been announced, and Stranger Things has become a multi-media franchise. Even Squid Game received a reality TV spinoff, Squid Game: The Challenge.

What One Piece Spinoffs Could Happen?

The One Piece universe has room for spinoffs

Although the idea of a live-action One Piece spinoff may sound risky at first, there is more than enough room in the world created by Oda for stories not centered on Luffy and the Straw Hat pirates. One Piece's story begins way before Luffy sets sail to become King of the Pirates and hides many secrets that not even the manga has unveiled yet. From a prequel about pirates and marines from the Old Era to the adventures of Shanks and Buggy aboard Gold Roger’s ship, there is no shortage of options for a potential One Piece spinoff.

Even the One Piece manga’s cover stories could be an inspiration for live-action spinoffs. Each corner of the One Piece map holds countless stories and legends, many of which could receive their own shows. For example, Mont Blanc Noland’s tragic journey into the ancient city of Shandora could make for a fantastic limited series that ties into One Piece’s eventual adaptation of Skypiea. Fan-favorite characters like Ace and even Buggy could carry their spinoff shows, especially if they do not contradict One Piece’s manga canon and simply expand the story told in the source material.
