The Strangest Midi-Chlorian Detail Proves Why Darth Vader Was Less Powerful Than Anakin Skywalker

Summary Anakin's midi-chlorian count gave him a unique advantage over Darth Vader's.

Despite Vader losing limbs and midi-chlorians, he compensated with dark side powers, remaining a formidable force in the galaxy.

Sabine Wren's Force push showcases that midi-chlorians aren't the sole determiner of Force-sensitivity, challenging the established beliefs.

One of the strangest debates in Star Wars revolves around the difference in power between Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader, and the answer may just be the difference in their midi-chlorian count. Anakin Skywalker was in his prime near the end of the Clone Wars, when he was agile and skilled enough to singlehandedly take down Count Dooku, a Sith Lord. Meanwhile, Darth Vader adapted his lightsaber form to better suit his clunky armor, resulting in overpowering strokes few Jedi could counter. Even after becoming Vader, Anakin never stopped being a fearsome warrior.

Recently, Star Wars has become obsessed with George Lucas’ idea of midi-chlorians from Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. In the first prequel, Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn explains that midi-chlorians reside in one’s blood, and that they continually speak to the Force, allowing one to connect to it. At the time, young Anakin Skywalker’s midi-chlorian count was higher than any known Jedi, highlighting how special he was in the Order. However, one minor midi-chlorian detail gives him a major advantage over his latter Sith persona.

Darth Vader Had Fewer Midi-Chlorians Than Anakin Skywalker

Logically speaking, if midi-chlorians do reside in the cells and tissue of a person’s body, then Vader—who had lost four of his limbs—had fewer midi-chlorians than Anakin Skywalker. Star Wars has yet to really touch on this strange loophole of how midi-chlorians work, but Vader’s body had lost plenty of blood after his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. With less blood to go around, Vader technically should have fewer midi-chlorians than before. And with fewer midi-chlorians, he should be less powerful in the Force.

Of course, Darth Vader seemingly overcame his midi-chlorian deficit. By drawing upon the dark side, Vader still savagely cut down all who stood in his way. He seems no less ferocious a fighter than when he was Anakin, even without the midi-chlorians in his four lost limbs. It’s quite possible the dark side fueled him enough to compensate for the midi-chlorians he’d lost, giving him new powers to terrorize the galaxy with.

Midi-Chlorians Aren’t The Only Determiner For Force-Sensitivity

Sabine Wren is proof of this

Despite The Phantom Menace’s insinuation that more midi-chlorians equal more Force-sensitivity, Disney’s Star Wars is slowly rewriting this fact. Characters like Sabine Wren—who Huyang firmly believed had less aptitude for the Force than any of the thousands of Jedi he’d seen—are proving that midi-chlorians aren’t the only factor in determining one’s Force-sensitivity. Despite her lack of talent, Sabine was still able to give Ezra Bridger an impressive Force push near the end of the Ahsoka series.

Even though Palpatine is obsessed with midi-chlorian cloning in The Bad Batch, he obviously missed something crucial in Force-sensitivity science. His own apprentice, Vader, proved that losing limbs—and the midi-chlorians along with them—didn’t stop him from increasing his power in the Force. But until Star Wars explains just how many midi-chlorians are lost in a severed limb, the safe assumption is that Vader was actually less powerful in the Force than Anakin.
