Russell T Davies explains how Doctor Who season 14, episode 4, "73 Yards", was filmed with minimal involvement by current Doctor Ncuti Gatwa due to the star's filming schedule. The current season of the long-running sci-fi series stars Gatwa as the Fifteenth incarnation of the Time Lord, as Millie Gibson becomes the latest companion to step aboard the TARDIS as Ruby Sunday. In "73 Yards," Ruby takes center stage as the companion becomes the center of a curse that leaves a mysterious woman stalking her and loved ones fleeing in fear.
Following season 14's somber fourth episode, Davies unveiled to Doctor Who: Unleashed how the episode's production came about due to scheduling issues. As Gatwa was filming Sex Education season 4, Ruby was made a focus of the story. Check out Davies' explanation below:
"The whole setup of this is partly because Ncuti was busy filming Sex Education. We had to start filming, so we kind of happily embraced the opportunity to say, let’s focus on Millie as Ruby. And that gives you a chance to explore her character. It gives us a chance to explore her as an actor. And it’s really rewarding. It’s really paying back. She’s doing the most brilliant job."
