10 Anime that Absolutely NEED New Seasons to Continue Their Story

Summary Some anime, like A Sign of Affection, need another season to properly adapt their source material.

Zatch Bell requires a revival to properly conclude the manga's ending and explore new storylines.

Shows like Ouran High School Host Club are in need of a proper continuation to fully realize the manga's story.

While many fan-favorite shows have gotten satisfying conclusions to their stories, there are a variety of anime that absolutely need another season to properly adapt their source material. Some series such as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Parasyte were able to see their full stories brought to the small screen. However, other shows sadly ended before they had a chance to get to the best parts.

Not even ongoing series are safe from the threat of ending before their story can be fully told. While shows like Spy x Family are more than likely to continue due to their immense popularity, they still have to wait for a proper greenlight to happen, which has led to the end of many notable series over time.

Now, in today's age of reboot culture, there have been some notable shows like Fruits Basket that have gotten the chance to come back and try things again with either a new season or a total remake. With this in mind, here are ten shows that absolutely need to be considered next for proper continuation.

10 A Sign of Affection Hasn't Reached Its Biggest Moments

Original Airing: 2024

"The way things end feels like there's not much story to tell. However, when looking at the manga, there's actually a whole arc that follows where the anime ends that's yet to be told."

While A Sign of Affection is a fairly new series, it's still relatively unclear if it will get a second season. The final episode of the first season is fairly conclusive with Yuki and Itsuomi preparing to travel the world together as they make their relationship official following a successful first date. The way things end feels like there's not much story left to tell. However, when looking at the manga, there's actually a whole arc that follows where the anime ends that's yet to be told.

The remaining chapters of the manga follow Yuki introducing Itsuomi to her relatives while exploring the newfound relationship between Ema and Shin. The manga is currently ongoing, so there's still a wide variety of stories left to tell. However, this doesn't mean that it's safe from cancelation. The popularity of the series, which led to Crunchyroll actually making the first three episodes free for Valentine's Day, undoubtedly gives the anime a chance to continue. However, unlike Spy x Family, which has become a major worldwide phenomenon, the show's renewal isn't exactly guaranteed.

9 Zatch Bell Needs to Get Its Proper Manga Ending

Original Airing: 2003-2006

Close

Zatch Bell rose through the ranks as one of Toonami's most popular series when it was localized in America during the mid-2000s. This series, which follows a Mamodo named Zatch Bell and his book master, Kiyo, was immsensely successful because of its exciting premise of battling other Mamodos in a massive tournament. The series lasted an impressive three years with over 100 episodes. However, it eventually came to an end just a year before the manga.

A revival of this hit series would be a major event for fans of the series as it would be able to properly adapt the manga's finale. Zatch Bell originally ended with the winner of the tournament never revealed, so giving the series a chance to properly conclude and answer this long-held question would be incredible. Plus, by exploring Clear Note's part in the story more, the darker parts of Zatch Bell's story could finally be seen, setting up the series for a far more epic finale than what was given.

8 Ouran High School Host Club Only Covers a Third of the Canon Story

Original Airing: 2006

Close

This cult classic shojo series has become a major hit among fans since the series ended following a brief season. Its exploration of gender and identity has made it one of the most notable LGBTQ+ anime in recent memory, while also giving viewers some of the most wholesome characters they can find in a romantic comedy (save for a few problematic examples by today's standards). However, similar to most prematurely canceled series, Ouran High School Host Club ended while the manga was still ongoing, only adapting the first eight volumes of the series' 18 volume run.

"By cutting things off at the Ball, it leaves way too much open as various plotlines from the manga never get the chance to further develop Haruhi's relationship with the host club."

There's still so much left to the story as Haruhi's romance with Tamaki begins to blossom. In fact, the final episode of the show hints at where things will go as she dances with every member of the club. However, by cutting things off at the Ball, it leaves way too much open, as various plotlines from the manga never get the chance to further develop Haruhi's relationship with the host club. A continuation would not only be met with roaring hype from fans that have fallen in love with the series over the years, but it will also give Bisco Hatori's legendary shojo manga a chance to fully be realized on the screen.

7 Tokyo Ghoul Needs a Reboot After a Disappointing Second Season

Original Airing: 2014-2018

Close

Tokyo Ghoul was a series that became an instant hit with fans for its thrilling gory action that plunged viewers into the world of humans and ghouls. However, when the second season came around, the series was immediately lambasted for completely going in a different direction from the manga. While the series got a second chance with a third season, Tokyo Ghoul: re, which turned back to the source material to adapt the manga's sequel, the series had left such a bad impression on fans.

If Tokyo Ghoul were to get another shot, it would likely either need to be a remake or a second attempt at a new season that ignores season two and picks up with the first left off. This would give the series a chance to properly adapt its source material while continuing the anime where fans of the manga wanted the series to go. It's admirable to see the creators of the anime take Tokyo Ghoul in a new direction to tell a new story, but given how much it ignored from the source material, it would ultimately be for the best to see the original manga properly play out instead.

6 School-Live! Ends Just as Things Get Interesting

Original Airing: 2015

Close

"It leaves so much open for a second season, yet the show sadly never continued."

This unique take on the zombie apocalypse wowed fans with its clever subversion of the typical high school comedy series. The show follows a group of school girls living inside a school as part of the "School Living Club". However, it turns out that all the happy-go-lucky segments are seen through the eyes of Yuki, a girl who is delusional about the reality that the zombie apocalypse is happening outside, and she and her friends are the only survivors at her school. It's a grade-A premise that absolutely nails what it's going for in execution.

However, the series ultimately ends just as things are getting interesting. The final episode shows the girls eventually leaving the school after it's been left uninhabitable. However, as they leave, a mysterious girl discovers one of their letters. It leaves so much open for a second season, yet the show sadly never continued. Given how well-regarded the anime was when it originally aired, a second season that follows the girls on their journey through zombie-infested Japan from Yuki's perspective would be an exciting way to continue the story, especially since there are multiple volumes of the original manga left to adapt.

5 Komi Can't Communicate Still Hasn't Introduced Komi's Best Friend

Original Airing: 2021-2022

Close

A sleeper Netflix hit ripe with adorable moments, Komi Can't Communicate is a hilarious adaptation of the manga of the same name by Tomohito Ito. The comedic writing and lovable characters made this anime an absolute hit among fans as they would tune in week-to-week to see Komi's story unfold. When the season came to an end, it set up an exciting future for the series as Komi says she looks forward to another year with her friends. However, fans are still waiting for confirmation of a new batch of episodes to this day.

What's upsetting about Komi Can't Communicate not receiving a greenlight yet is that the manga has so much in store for the series' protagonist. The biggest character from the manga, Manbagi Rumiko, has yet to be introduced, and she's arguably the most important friend Komi would ever make. The two relate to each other on a personal level as they bond over their shared difficulty of making friends. Hopefully a new season will be introduced soon because the amount of development she brings to Komi's character in the manga is absolutely huge and could propel the series into one of the best romantic comedies.

4 Soul Eater Created an Entirely New Ending for the Anime

Original Airing: 2008-2009

Close

"Should Soul Eater get a proper adaptation, it would be best to go back to where the series last adapted the manga and start there, ignoring all other episodes that came later."

Soul Eater has become a classic among anime fans for its exhilarating action scenes and interesting character dynamics. Crona, in particular, became an instant fan-favorite for their villain-to-hero arc as they battle with the darkness inside them that he learned from their mother, Medusa. However, with the manga ongoing and the series expected to end, the show would eventually create an entirely new climax to properly conclude the series. While the ending for the show wasn't maligned, it still left many fans yearning for a proper adaptation of the manga finale.

Should Soul Eater get a proper adaptation, it would be best to go back to where the series last adapted the manga and start there, ignoring all other episodes that came later. This attempt at a "requel" for Soul Eater would give fans the option to either check out the more faithful ending to the story or enjoy the original ending created specifically for the anime. It wouldn't be the first anime to do this either, as Fullmetal Alchemist would eventually get remade with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood starting from scratch and being more faithful than its predecessor.

3 Kakegurui Ended in the Middle of an Arc

Original Airing: 2017-2019

Close

Kakegurui is an example of a series that needed to plan to have some closure before mapping out its season. This show had a unique premise which explored a school whose entire hierarchy is based off gambling. However, when the school presidency becomes open in the second season, Kakegurui XX, an election is held where the person who earns the most "votes" through gambling competitions wins. It's a cool way to show students battling for power while staying faithful to what made Kakegurui an interesting story.

However, by the end of XX, no winner had been chosen. It would be assumed that the results would be saved for another season, but one has yet to be greenlit. The only thing to come from Kakegurui since then is an adaptation of the manga's prequel series, Kakegurui Twin. It's disappointing knowing that after five years, this anime will likely not get a proper ending. However, if something is announced, it will be important for the creators to make sure the election reaches its end by the time they finish the third season.

2 Deadman Wonderland Unceremoniously Ends at the Reveal of Its Biggest Mystery

Original Airing: 2011

Close

"Deadman Wonderland is a series that fans have been begging for a follow-up since it was unveiled that there wouldn't be a second season."

This death-game style anime took audiences by storm with its exciting premise of a band of prisoners competing for "candy" to keep themselves alive from deadly toxins being pumped into their bloodstream through their collars. The whole first season focuses on the main character, Ganta, trying to survive while trying to figure out who the Red Man, who killed his whole class and framed him for it. However, just as the mystery kicked into high gear with a mysterious girl named Shiro humming a lullaby Ganta heard before his class was killed, the series just ended.

Deadman Wonderland is a series that fans have been begging for a follow-up since it was unveiled that there wouldn't be a second season. There's so much more story to tell, and the tease of Shiro potentially being connected to the Red Man was enough to draw serious intrigue. It's a series that will likely never be finished, but one can hope to finally see this anime get a proper ending following a major cliffhanger.

1 The Promised Neverland Ruined Its Reputation with Its Ending

Original Airing: 2019-2021

Close

When The Promised Neverland first debuted in 2019, it became an instant hit among fans. Its clever subversion of an innocent-looking story with its horrific twist of kids being prepared to be eaten made for a fantastic story. When the second season was announced, fans were thrilled to return to this story's world, only to be left severely disappointed when it didn't just end, but also skipped over major arcs from the manga with a slideshow epilogue.

In a way, The Promised Neverland never truly ended. Teasing fans with what happens in the manga that they won't get to see in the show understandably made viewers angry because it hinted at interesting arcs that now would never come to pass. This is undeniably an anime that needs a follow-up to properly adapt the story because it didn't just leave fans upset, but it also completely tarnished the show's name.
