How Long Is The Free Trial For FFXIV?
Summary Final Fantasy 14's free trial includes content up to Level 70, covering a substantial portion of the game.
The trial includes two key expansions, Heavensward and Stormblood, offering hundreds of hours of gameplay.
While some features are restricted, the trial has no time limit.
Buying and subscribing to Final Fantasy 14 can be a big commitment, but the game's famous free trial offers a much more welcoming way to enter. New players can try out quite a bit of the MMO before deciding if it's ultimately for them, and all the progress made through playing the free trial of FFXIV will carry over to an active subscription. It's also possible to play with friends and any players on the same server during the free trial, as long as veterans are content to run through some lower-level content again.
The complicated thing about the FFXIV free trial is that it hasn't always covered the same amount of content. Final Fantasy 14 is a continually growing game, and as the list of expansions has grown longer, so has the lineup of content included in the free trial. This makes it a more appealing package now than ever before, and although there's no guarantee that it will always keep growing in the future, it's quite a substantial package for no cost at this point.

The FFXIV Free Trial Has Hundreds Of Hours Of Content
Two Key Expansions Are Included
Close
FFXIV's free trial covers gameplay up to Level 70, which is a huge chunk of the entire leveling progress for the game. The release of the Dawntrail expansion in July 2024 will bring an overall level cap of 90 up to 100, although it's important to note that later levels can obviously take more time and powerful equipment. Getting to 70, however, is no minor task from any perspective.
When it comes to actual content, the Final Fantasy 14 free trial also includes a lot more than just the base game at this point. Over the years, the Heavensward and Stormblood expansions have also been added, bringing the content up to the state of the paid game in 2017. 2019's Shadowbringers expansion may be added in the future, but it's not expected with the launch of Dawntrail, so accessing that for free could be a longer wait.
Based on past patterns, if Shadowbringers does ever come to the free trial, it's unlikely to be until a couple of years after the release of Dawntrail.
Realistically, playing through all of this content in no rush could end up taking hundreds of hours, so the free trial for Final Fantasy 14 is more or less a complete game in its own right. It's hard to place specific numbers on the experience, as FFXIV is chock-full of side quests and random content, but expansions tend to add somewhere around 50 hours of story material to the game unless someone is taking a beeline path.
So, factoring in the base game and the two expansions included, the free trial for FFXIV is around 150 hours. Choosing to continue beyond that point will require investing more money, but that can be a decision to make later on.
Restrictions On Final Fantasy 14's Free Trial
There's No Time Limit, But Some Features Aren't Available
In terms of just how high that potential playtime can go, Final Fantasy 14 doesn't impose any time restriction on its free trial, so it's theoretically possible to play it forever. Leveling and new content will eventually stop, of course, but those more interested in hanging out in its cities and meeting up with friends socially could still have plenty to do after finishing up quests and story material.

The free trial isn't without its restrictions, however. Outside of the quest content, there are caps to things like in-game currency and how many playable characters can be created. Free trial users also have no access to trade, Ultimate Raids, and party creation (it's still possible to join one created by another player). The full list of free trial terms can be found on an official Square Enix support page for the game, so anyone concerned about being able to use certain specific features should check to make sure it doesn't fall under a prohibited category.
All limitations taken into consideration, it's still impressive just how much content can be accessed for free in Final Fantasy 14. The A Realm Reborn base game, Heavensward, and Stormblood are all lengthy campaigns, and they kept even paying players occupied for years of the game's history. Final Fantasy 14's free trial doesn't offer the complete experience, but with hundreds of hours of playable content, it's a lot bigger than most complete games out there.
