George R. R. Martin's latest A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight update reveals how the upcoming series differs from other Game of Thrones adaptations. There are currently several spinoffs connected to Thrones that are in various stages of development. That includes Hedge Knight, a prequel which is based on the Dunk & Egg novellas written by Martin.
On his blog, Martin provided some insight into The Hedge Knight. The author wrote that the prequel will be shorter than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon and much different in tone. Martin also highlighted writer Ira Parker and Owen Harris, who directed the Emmy-winning "San Junipero" episode of Black Mirror, and will three of the spinoff's six episodes. Read Martin's update below:
The Hedge Knight will be a lot shorter than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, with a much different tone… but it's still Westeros, so no one is truly safe. Ira Parker and his team are doing a great job. Oh, and we have our director as well: Owen Harris, a terrific British director whose credits include helming "San Junipero", my all-time favorite episode of Black Mirror. Owen will direct three of our six episodes.
What We Know About The Hedge Knight Spinoff
Major Roles Have Been Cast
Per the official logline, the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms spinoff takes place a century before the events of Game of Thrones. The story follows two unlikely heroes that wander Westeros: a naive but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, along with his diminutive squire, Egg. The logline goes on to mention that the events unfold during a time when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne. The last dragon has not yet passed from living memory and great destinies, not to mention powerful foes, await the improbable friends.

In terms of its connection to the main Game of Thrones series and the House of the Dragon spinoff, The Hedge Knight is set about 70 years before House of the Dragon and roughly 100 years before Thrones. The project took a major leap forward in April when it was announced that former rugby player Peter Claffey and young actor Dexter Sol Ansell were cast in the respective lead roles of Dunk and Egg.

Martin himself is involved in the spinoff, credited as an executive producer. He is joined by Ira Parker, a writer on House of the Dragon season 1, who penned the pilot script for The Hedge Knight. David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns HBO, mentioned during an earnings call that The Hedge Knight will premiere in mid-2025, keeping the franchise on the air in one form or another after Game of Thrones has ended.
