How Many Pokémon Are In Pokémon Legends: Arceus' Pokédex?

How Many Pokémon Are In Pokémon Legends: Arceus' Pokédex?

Summary Legends: Arceus has 242 Pokédex entries, fewer than Scarlet and Violet's 400 entries.

The game revisits the Sinnoh region with time travel, featuring Gen 4 and other generations.

Z-A, the sequel, based on Gen 6, could potentially introduce more entries than Arceus.

Pokémon has come a long way since its first title introduced its 151 Pokédex entries. Since then, thousands of Pokémon have been added to the ever-growing roster, making each title's Pokédex bigger and bigger. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a bit of an oddball in the franchise, revisiting an older region without being a remake or remaster, and its Pokédex reflects this.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus revisits the Sinnoh region from Diamond and Pearl. This makes a decent chunk of its roster from Gen 4, although there are a few entries from later or previous generations. Curiously enough, Arceus calls the region from Gen 4 the Hisui region, being based on Hokkaido during early Japanese history, as the game has time travel to the past, and Sinnoh is a term that was created later in the timeline.

The Number Of Pokémon in Legends: Arceus' Pokédex

An Impressive Number, But Not The Most In Franchise History

Close

There are 242 Pokédex entries in Legends: Arceus. It is certainly a lot compared to Red and Blue's 151 entries but pales in comparison to the 400 in Scarlet and Violet's Pokédex. Despite sharing the same generation as Diamond and Pearl, Arceus expands massively on the entries from those titles since they followed in the footsteps of the first-ever games and also have 151 Pokédex entries.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon has over 800 Pokémon, the most of any title in the series.

Many Gen 4 favorites, like Shinx, Gible, and the three starters, make a return in Legends: Arceus, as players might expect. Legendaries from other generations also make an appearance in the game, like the Forces of Nature from Gen 5. Strangely, starters from other generations are also included, such as Cyndaquil and Oshawott, but Charmander, who seems to make an appearance in every Pokémon title, has been omitted.

All The Pokémon In Legends: Arceus

An Odd Entry

Unlike other Pokédexs that begin their entries with the starters of that region, Legends: Arceus takes a strange approach. It begins with Rowlet, a largely insignificant Pokémon from Gen 7, rather than putting Chimchar, Piplup, and Turtwig at the start. The end of the Pokédex makes more sense, however, as that section is reserved largely for Legendary Pokémon, in keeping with the other entries in the series.

The Gen 4 starters are placed rather randomly in the Pokédex, with Piplup being entry 161, Chimchar being entry 061 and Turtwig being entry 130.

Could Legends: Z-A Give Players A Larger Pokédex?

Legends Z-A Could Include More Pokémon

Custom Image by Katarina Cimbaljevic

242 Pokédex entries are impressive, but with a giant open world to explore, it could be expanded on in later Legends titles. With Pokémon Legends: Z-A on the horizon, it could introduce even more entries than its predecessor. This is likely if the latest title takes the same approach as Arceus in basing most of its roster on the game using the same region in which it's based.

While Pokémon Legends: Arceus is based on Gen 4 and its 151 Pokédex entries, Z-A is based on Gen 6, which has split its Pokédex into three sections of 150+ entries each. This could mean that Arceus' sequel could eclipse 242 entries rather easily, having more Pokémon to include. Then again, this could not be the case since not every Pokémon from Gen 4, specifically Platinum, made it into Arceus, and something similar could happen with Z-A.
