Based on the beloved Jill Murphy children's novel series of the same name, The Worst Witch received a Netflix series adaptation in 2017, and lasted for four seasons, but it doesn't look like The Worst Witch season 5 is going to happen. The third of three televised adaptations, the 2017 show follows the adventures of the sweet yet accident-prone Mildred Hubble (Bella Ramsey and Lydia Page), a young girl who discovers she is a witch and is accepted into the prestigious Cackle's Academy. There, she makes friends and enemies and struggles to keep up with her new world of witchcraft.

The Last of Us' Bella Ramsey left The Worst Witch after season 3 due to personal mental health reasons. Lydia Page replaced her in season 4, and Mildred's change of appearance was explained away by a spell gone wrong.

The Worst Witch season 4 finds Mildred and co. entering their fourth year of study at Cackle's Academy. Though still a lovable underdog, Mildred has found her footing at the witchcraft school, and goes up against her rival, Ethel Hallow (Jenny Richardson) to become head girl. Much of the season is centered around the girls competing in various head girl challenges. Ethel appears to have it in the bag, but when Mildred saves the school in the season finale, she wins the position. What Head Girl Mildred Hubble looks like will remain a mystery without The Worst Witch season 5.

The Worst Witch Season 5 Is Not Confirmed

Season 4 Aired All The Way Back In 2020, Making A Renewal Unlikely

While The Worst Witch was never officially canceled, season 4 ran from January-April 2020. With it being four years since the season 4 finale, season 5 is a highly unlikely prospect. At first glance, it doesn't make sense not to have a Worst Witch season 5, as Cackle's Academy runs on a five-year program, and each season features a year of study for Mildred and friends. However, much like other projects, filming for The Worst Witch was likely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. And with the main young cast being teenagers, they've since aged out of their roles.

Most Of The Main Actors Would Return If The Story Picked Up Right After The Season 4 Finale

Should a Worst Witch season 5 want to pick up where season 4 left off, the cast would essentially remain the same. Lydia Page would likely resume her duties as protagonist Mildred Hubble with best friends Maud Spellbody (Megan Hughes) and Enid Nightshade (Tamara Smart) by her side, and rivals Ethel Hallow (Jenny Richardson) and Felicity Foxglove (Dagny Rollins) also back at Cackle's Academy.

The Cackle's Academy faculty would also largely remain intact, including headmistress Miss Ada Cackle (Clare Higgins), tough-as-nails deputy headmistress Miss Joy Hecate Hardbroom (Raquel Cassidy), and physical education teacher Miss Dimity Drill (Shauna Shim). Mildred's mother, Julie Hubble (Nicola Stephenson), has also featured in all four seasons of The Worst Witch, so she would likely return.

The Worst Witch Season 5 Story Details

The Show Could Pick Up Where It Left Off Or Follow The '90s Show's Example

The Worst Witch season 4 ended not only with Mildred being named head girl but also her burying the hatchet with Ethel, and offering Ethel the position of advisor. Season 5 could go in a number of directions from here — Ethel could be secretly plotting against Mildred, or Ethel's superior attitude could rub off on Mildred, causing tension with Maud and Enid. And as other seasons have shown, there will likely be a big magic threat to Cackle's Academy that only Mildred can, somehow, stop.

However, with season 4 ending over four years ago, the Cackle's Academy pupil actors are likely too old to pick up right where their characters left off. But the show could take a cue from the 1998 Worst Witch series for a potential season 5.

The three-season '90s show boasted a spinoff and a sequel series. The spinoff was called The New Worst Witch and followed Mildred's younger cousin, Hettie Hubble, and the next generation of Cackle's Academy students. The newer series could take this approach, and this way it would be able to retain its adult faculty cast.

The Worst Witch's sequel series was Weirdsister College, which saw Mildred and Ethel continuing their education at the titular school, only this time matriculating with boys. This is another option for The Worst Witch season 5, and would mean the beloved young cast could remain intact.
