Jeremy Renner Teases Death & Rebirth In Mayor Of Kingstown Season 3
Summary Mayor of Kingstown season 3 returns with explosions, a new face of Russian mob, and a drug war.
Jeremy Renner's character, Mike McLusky, faces grief and reconciliation with Bunny in the new season.
Renner opens up about difficult return to filming after a life-threatening accident, finding hope in work.
Taylor Sheridan continues his Paramount+ reign with Mayor of Kingstown, which returns for season 3 on June 2. The Yellowstone creator branched out from ranches to prison industrial complexes in the thrilling drama, which he developed with actor Hugh Dillon. Mayor of Kingstown follows the McLusky family, led by Jeremy Renner as the eldest surviving son Mike, who mediates between the cops and criminals that make up the company town.
Mayor of Kingstown season 2's battle between Mike and Russian mobster Milo (Game of Thrones star Aiden Gillen) ended in an explosive cliffhanger that left his mother Mariam (Dianne Wiest) fighting for her life. With the legendary actor not reprising her role in season 3, it's clear that Mike and his brother Kyle McLusky (Taylor Handley) will be deep in mourning upon the show's return. The atmosphere surrounding the show, on the other hand, is far more joyous given that Renner made such a miraculous recovery from his own life-threatening experience over a year ago.

Mayor Of Kingstown Season 3 Opens With A Moment Of Grief
“There’s a rebirth with the death”

Screen Rant: Keeping peace on the streets is not easy for Mike McLusky. The last time we saw Mike in the Mayor of Kingstown, his mom had been shot and she was left in a bad way. How does the fallout from that affect Mike and Kyle this season?
Jeremy Renner: Well, it's in a really, really big way. It is pretty uniting and bonding when you go through a terrible experience with somebody, right? And especially when it's your mom, and then having to mourn that. You don't get too much time in Kingstown to mourn and grieve; you've got to move on. With that, there's a rebirth with the death. There's a rebirth of the baby, and the focus kind of goes on that and into hope. It's hard to find hope in Kingstown too, but I think through the birth of baby Mitch, I think that's how they begin to cope with the loss of their mom.
One of the most interesting relationships on the show is between Mike and Bunny, but I would say it was put to the test last season. What can we expect from the two this season?
Jeremy Renner: I think it grows. This relationship always grows; they bromanced the first season, and they fought the second season. And in this one, I think you get a little bit of both. There's always a bond with these two characters that you just got to love. They have camaraderie and a business working relationship, and even a brotherly relationship, and I love that as well. I always expand upon it. There's always tension. There's stuff where they don't get along. They're like brothers, and they just don't get along sometimes. When they do, it's great, and they can always crack jokes. But there's a divide. There's always the business side of their world, and then what their lives are like. Sometimes they line up, and sometimes they don't. So, we're going to get both of those in big ways this season.
Jeremy Renner Opens Up About The Difficult Return To Mayor Of Kingstown Post-Accident
“I needed something to look forward to.”

I'm happy that you're doing well, man. You made a recovery. Did you ever consider not returning for season 3, and how did that affect season 3 at all?
Jeremy Renner: Yeah, I didn't consider really anything for a good while. Wow. Maybe in the summer, I even considered the idea of it. But then just, I always had to have something to look forward to. My recovery was like, I needed something to look forward to. It was another step. And then it became, "What am I doing today?" I didn't have to look too far forward, but I think everybody needs something to look forward to. The idea of wanting to do Mayor [of Kingstown] was something to, in the distance, maybe get back on my feet again. "Okay, great, maybe I can get back to work again." A year later after the accident was when we started picking up and doing it, and I probably wasn't quite physically ready, but I felt mentally ready and prepared. We had a lot of great people to get through the tough time of getting back on my feet for this thing. Me, Hugh [Dillon], and our showrunner Dave Erickson are working really hard, man. We worked really hard, and we're really happy and proud of not only the season but also the physical recovery of it all during this difficult season. And it is also great, to be honest. I'm proud to get everybody back to work, man. We just got off a long strike for actors and writers, and so it was nice to just get people back to work, man. That felt really good too.
