Navarro’s fate in True Detective: Night Country gets an insightful response from Kali Reis after the show’s ambiguous ending. Season 4 of HBO’s anthology series follows Liz Danvers (Jodi Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis), and their investigation surrounding the disappearance at Tsalal Arctic Research Station. Along with Foster and Reis, the cast of True Detective: Night Country included Finn Bennett, Isabella Star LaBlanc, Christopher Eccleston, John Hawkes, and Fiona Shaw. Though she appeared in the final shot of “Part 6,” opposite Danvers, there has been speculation about whether Reis’ character died or not.
Speaking on the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, Reis explained that because of Night Country’s ambiguous ending, audiences could interpret Navarro’s fate either way, but noted that her character would only return for Danvers. Reis then revealed that she has her own opinion on Navarro’s fate, but is remaining tight-lipped about it. Read Reis’ comments below:
What I will leave everybody with is this: if you want to think that Navarro followed her sister, she walked on the ice and finally just gave in, and was at peace, and just went with the things that she was running from, okay. If you think that she’s finally at peace, and she gave in, and she can live here among us, and she understands how to balance it better and is at peace, okay. Whatever way you choose to go, I will say that the first and probably only person she would come to see, whether she’s here or not, would be Danvers. So, it’s your choice, whichever you decide to choose. But, I have my own theory, I haven’t told anybody. Sealed, Fort Knox, I ain’t saying a word. [Laughs] But either way, what’s really cool about what Issa did is that she suggests — and you get to choose through the whole thing, from point A to Z, if you decide to be very practical, it leads to practical answers. And it’s the same thing on the spiritual side, if you want to be tuned to the spiritual, that’s the way she went, there’s answers from A to Z there, too. So, it’s up to you, which is cool, because it’s open-ended, and it’s up to the audience, you feel involved, and you guys get to keep talking about it forever. [Chuckles]
How Navarro’s Ambiguous Fate Affects The True Detective: Night Country Ending
Could It Be Addressed in Season 5?
Close
Supernatural events, including Rose’s (Shaw) interaction with the ghost of Travis Cohle, were scattered throughout season 4. It may be hard to determine what happened because of that, along with Navarro’s family history and apparent visions. In the True Detective: Night Country finale, after confronting Raymond (Owen McDonnell) about the death of Annie and admitting to Danvers about Holden and her beliefs, Reis’ character walks out among the frozen terrain.
As Reis mentioned, various conclusions can be drawn, but the show indicates that Navarro was in a better state of mind by the end. The moment she walked away, which some agree parallels the death of Julia (Aka Niviâna), and Danvers' reflection on Alaska might suggest that Navarro died, but because other characters supposedly saw her around, the alternative is also possible. If True Detective season 5 includes any threads from Night Country, perhaps more about her fate will be revealed there.
It is still interesting to consider what happened to Navarro in True Detective: Night Country, and what outcome Reis believes in. Whether it eventually gets revealed, in season 5 or by Reis herself, remains to be seen, but her comments about the season finale and Navarro's fate could lead to further discussion among viewers.
True Detective: Night Country is available to stream on Max.
