"The Omega Mutant": X-Men Settles Its Greatest Mutant Hero with New Codename

Summary Nimrod names an iconic X-Men hero 'the Omega Mutant' - the one hero who is left fighting when all others fall.

The ultimate Sentinel, Nimrod has run endless combat simulations of his final battle with the X-Men, always ending with a one-on-one fight against Cyclops.

However, Fall of the House of X reveals Nimrod got it wrong, and it's actually Storm who earns the title and ultimately destroys him.

Warning: spoilers for Fall of the House of X #5!As X-Men's epic 2019-2024 Krakoan Era draws to a close, the franchise has named 1 hero "the Omega Mutant." The name signifies the last hero left standing out of all of mutantkind, and thus the Sentinels' final target in their extermination of the species. For months, Marvel has teased that the X-Men's era-defining battle would come down to one "last mutant standing." Now, fans know who that final, definitive hero actually is.

In Fall of the House of X, fans witness the final battle against Nimrod. Nimrod is the ultimate Sentinel, created from tech sent back in time to exterminate mutants as a species. Nimrod is infinitely adaptive, to the point that even the Omega level hero Legion - who can essentially manifest any superpower - admitted he can't beat it. In this final battle, the narration notes that Nimrod has run countless battle simulations, always facing down the same Omega Mutant to crush the franchise's heroes for good - Scott Summers' Cyclops.

However, no matter how advanced the AI villain may be, Marvel's mutants are endlessly creative, and it turns out that Nimrod's prediction was wrong. It's actually Ororo Munroe's Storm who comes in clutch as the true Omega Mutant, rescuing Cyclops from death and giving the mutants a chance to regroup. Storm then unites with Cyclops, Magneto, Polaris and Synch, combining their powers to obliterate Nimrod's body and - most importantly - his code, finally ending this terrifying threat forever.

X-Men #7 officially branded Scott Summers "the best X-Man," while Cyclops himself declared, "I am the X-Men" - a claim he's lived up to again and again.

The Ultimate Sentinel Declares Storm 'The Omega Mutant'

Nimrod Suspected Cyclops Would Be His Final Foe - He Was Wrong

For the last five years, mutantkind has edged closer and closer to extinction, as even the most powerful beings on the planet found themselves unable to halt Nimrod's evolution. Created with impossibly advanced tech and able to project itself across multiple near-invulnerable bodies, Nimrod is the ultimate mutant-killing machine, and the thing that the entire mutant nation of Krakoa was formed to fend off.

Sadly, the X-Men have been losing badly against his raw power and unlimited adaptability, and it's only by uniting their powers that they're able to destroy all traces of Nimrod, with Magneto and Polaris enhancing Storm's power and allowing her and Synch to channel lightning through every system connected to Nimrod's core AI. While Cyclops cracks Nimrod's chassis with his optic blasts, it's Storm's intercession that saves the X-Men's lives and makes victory possible.

Throughout the Krakoan Era, Cyclops has acted as a symbol of the X-Men, embodying their principles and goals. He led the team until being imprisoned by the anti-mutant Orchis group in their final push, then carried out a daring escape that brought him into conflict with Nimrod. X-Men #7 officially branded him "the best X-Man," while Cyclops himself declared, "I am the X-Men" - a claim he's lived up to again and again.

This increased prominence dovetailed with the release of X-Men '97, where a more comic-accurate depiction of Scott Summers woke up many fans to the character's potential. It's therefore appropriate that the height of the Cyclops renaissance sees Scott taking on Nimrod in the final battle for mutant survival. However, even in this context, it's even more appropriate that Storm is the hero to earn the Omega Mutant moniker.

Over the last five years of X-Men comics, Storm became a goddess, spoke for the solar system, and resurrected the dead.

The Last Five Years Proved Storm Is a Mutant God

From Ruling Mars to Resurrecting Magneto, Storm Has Been the Mutant GOAT

While Cyclops spent the last five years stewarding the X-Men through immense challenges, Storm became Marvel's most influential character. Storm has been the centerpiece of Al Ewing and Stefano Caselli's epic X-Men Red, which saw her become the ruler of a militant mutant society on Mars. Storm held onto her seat despite a rule that said anyone could challenge her for it in gladiatorial combat, and earned the respect of this warrior society. However, that was just the beginning.

Storm's position on Mars led to her becoming the 'Voice of Sol' - the one person who speaks for Earth's solar system to the rest of the galactic powers. She fought off Genesis - billed as the Omega of Omegas - for the fate of the planet and its people, and in the Sins of Sinister event, fans watched as she went from a rebel leader to a literal goddess over the course of 1000 years.

Storm's war against Genesis earned her another new codename in X-Men Red #18, with her enemy attempting to insult Ororo as "the Queen of Commoners."

Having embraced both her mutant powers and her connection to magic, Storm then resolved to resurrect Magneto, traveling to the afterlife in a cosmic rescue mission that brought him back younger and more powerful than ever before. As a ruler, warrior, and powerhouse, the Krakoan Era has seen Storm challenged by the single biggest challenges of any solo Marvel hero, progressively putting the weight of an entire world, a solar system, and the entire universe on her shoulders. After those accomplishments, saving her species as the Omega Mutant is the perfect cherry on top, as well as a sly dig by Marvel at anyone who's still underestimating the X-Men's weather witch.

Declaring Storm the Omega Mutant also perfectly sets up X-Men's new era, beginning this July. In the 'From the Ashes' era, Marvel will show the mutant nation of Krakoa destroyed, with mutants once again living as a hated and feared minority among humans. Fans had worried that this new status quo would entirely throw away Krakoa's legacy, however Marvel recently announced that the new era will see Storm join the Avengers in Avengers #17 (by Jed MacKay and Valerio Schiti).

Marvel teased Storm joining the team by declaring her "Earth's Mightiest Mutant," and the last five years have more than justified that claim. First appearing in 1975, Storm has gone from strength to strength ever since, remaining one of Marvel's most beloved female heroes and perhaps the most iconic black superhero in comics history. For X-Men fans, it's long past due to see her acknowledged with the Omega Mutant title and membership on the Avengers, showing that whatever the future holds for Marvel's merry mutants, the publisher recognizes what it has in Ororo Munroe's Storm.
