Resident Evil 9 Has Already Been Delayed, Says Leaker

Summary Resident Evil 9's release may have been delayed to 2025/2026, disappointing fans expecting an announcement in 2024.

Rumors suggest major changes to the RE formula, possibly expanding on open-world aspects seen in Resident Evil: Village.

Capcom is also allegedly working on remakes of Resident Evil 0 and Code Veronica.

It seems like almost a given that Capcom is currently developing Resident Evil 9 but the latest reports regarding the sequel suggest it could still be a while before it is unveiled. Given the level of quality seen in the previous Resident Evil releases, those being Village and Resident Evil 4 Remake, one can't blame the community for becoming increasingly more excited about the next mainline game. Rumors have swirled that the ninth chapter in the saga will feature some major changes to the standard formula which may be why it's already being delayed.

Over on X (formerly Twitter), reputable leaker AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem, who has an excellent track record when it comes to predicting Resident Evil and Capcom news, wrote that those expecting an announcement regarding Resident Evil 9 in the summer of 2024 will be disappointed.

They allege that the game has been internally pushed back to target a late 2025/2026 release date, meaning it would likely be revealed closer to the end of 2024. The reason for the supposed delay is currently unknown but Dusk Golem claims Capcom is also working on other Resident Evil projects.

People Can't Wait To See What Capcom Is Cooking

While it remains pure speculation, a popular theory regarding Resident Evil 9's delay is that it will mark a major deviation from the franchise's norm, specifically in terms of its work design. Several leakers have suggested that Capcom is expanding the open-world aspect of the franchise that was first hinted at in Resident Evil: Village. Whether or not that's true has yet to be determined but Dusk Golem has previously stated that Capcom is attempting to pull off a major conclusion as Resident Evil 9 will supposedly mark the end of one saga and the beginning of another.

Whether or not Resident Evil 9 is delayed a few months, fans of the franchise still have plenty of exciting releases to anticipate. In the same post wherein they discuss the next mainline game, Dusk Golem also suggests that Capcom is busy developing remakes for the underrated Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica. They also note that a remake for Resident Evil 5 is not currently in development, pushing back against claims that it will be the series' next major release.

One can only hope that Resident Evil 9 doesn't spend too long languishing in development but given Capcom's recent track record, it seems safe to say that the studio will take as long as it needs. With the tremendous success it found with titles like the 2, 3, and 4 Remakes, as well as the reinvented first-person installments, it's clear that Capcom has a plan in mind. Having said that, many fans have requested a full-fledged reimagining of Code Veronica, so if that comes along earlier than expected, people will be happy to wait a bit longer for the ninth game.
