Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek #20!
After months of buildup, Star Trek is finally introducing the Pleroma along with the individual houses of some of the franchise’s gods. For the past several months, IDW’s Star Trek title has hinted at the existence of the Pleroma, or “the Realm of the Gods.” Now, with the universe’s god-like beings under siege, Sisko and the crew of the Theseus head to the Pleroma in Star Trek #20.
Star Trek #20 is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Megan Levens. The last of the Organians, T’Lir, has outfitted the Theseus with a new, experimental model of warp drive called the “Kardashev Drive.” It is the only way to pierce the barrier and enter the Pleroma. After a trippy sequence involving the activation of the Drive, Sisko and company see the Pleroma.
Appearing to their mortal eyes as a giant spiral, there are also houses scattered throughout, presumably the homes of the gods.
The Pleroma Is an Exciting Addition to the Star Trek Canon
The Pleroma Was Not Meant for Mortal Eyes
Since its launch, IDW’s flagship Star Trek title has explored the relationship between mortals and their gods, and the Pleroma is perhaps the best representative of it yet. Named after a concept from Gnostic systems of thought, the Pleroma’s existence was hinted at over the past several issues. T’Lir, who is revealed to be the last of the Organians, implores Sisko to travel to the Pleroma with them, in hopes of repairing the damage Kahless caused during his crusade against the gods. Yet as seen in Star Trek #20, the gods are less than thrilled to see Sisko.
Sisko and the Theseus’ crew enter the Pleroma in one of the trippiest sequences ever seen in a Star Trek comic. The surrealness was on full display, as the crew saw the Pleroma, most likely for the first time by mortal eyes. The giant spiral, and the houses that were seen floating in it, added an even further layer of weirdness. Among the “houses” Sisko and company saw were the Guardian of Forever, the Caretaker (from Star Trek: Voyager), Trelane’s home and Apollo’s temple, among others. More will no doubt be revealed in the months ahead.
The Pleroma Is Truly Where No One Has Gone Before
The Pleroma Features Gods and Angels
The revelation of the Pleroma’s existence opens up new frontiers in the Star Trek universe. Sisko and the Theseus have truly gone where no one has gone before, or at least mortals. The Pleroma is an exciting new realm to explore and learn about. Megan Levens’ depiction of the Pleroma is mind-bending and awe-inspiring. There are biblical angels as well as houses for the gods floating seemingly in midair. Yet underneath it all, the Pleroma is a dangerous place, and one that will impact the Star Trek franchise for years to come.
