Stardew Valley Player's Wholesome Act Of Kindness For Linus Deserves A Canon Place In-Game
Summary A player brought Linus a heater, sparking discussion on his storyline in Stardew Valley.
Linus' storyline lacks depth; helping him find a way to heat his tent could add character growth.
Placing a heater in Linus' tent can subtly enhance his story without disrupting his lifestyle.
One Stardew Valley player's thoughtful gift to Linus deserves to be made canon. Linus is one of Stardew Valley's more unusual characters. Homeless by choice, he lives in a tent west of the mines, where he forages and Dumpster dives for his daily sustenance. Although he's not one of the game's marriageable bachelors and bachelorettes, the player can forge a relationship with Linus if they so choose. That said, his storyline isn't as involved as some of the romanceable characters'. Most of his heart events simply involve him sending the player recipes in the mail.
For the most part, that's fine - players can still forge a decent relationship with Linus by sharing some of their forage, or baking him a pie. He rejects grander gestures by nature, insisting he's happy just as he stands. Still, some players take it upon themselves to help Linus in bigger, more lasting ways, without disrupting his lifestyle or passing judgment. There's just nothing in Stardew Valley's programming that allows Linus to acknowledge them either way. But a player's latest act of kindness demonstrates why Linus' storyline needs a little more fleshing out.

Making Linus' Tent Cozier
Reddit user FrostCA11 has sparked widespread discussion about Linus’ character and storyline in Stardew Valley simply by bringing him a heater. This is the same radiator used by the farmer to keep their barns warm and cozy in winter, but like most furniture, it can apparently be placed anywhere in the world. Linus doesn't acknowledge the heater's presence, but players in the comments explain that, upon entering his tent in the winter, they saw the heater on and rattling.
Heaters in Stardew Valley can be purchased from Marnie, and cost 2,000g. Placing one inside a barn increases the happiness level of all the animals inside, which in turn increases their likelihood of spawning high-quality products.
Why Linus’ Heater Deserves To Be Canon
Some Stardew Valley Characters Need Fleshing Out
Among Stardew's cast of characters, Linus’ storyline is pretty barebones. He simply sends the player recipes in the mail, and eventually, appears in a scene where he expresses contentment. His storyline could use a little more detail, and helping him find a way to heat his tent would be an interesting interaction. Since he's wary of strangers, the issue likely wouldn't even come up until the player had progressed his relationship sufficiently. By opening up to them, Linus would demonstrate some much-needed character growth. And if the ensuing quest could somehow rope in other villagers, it could lead to greater acceptance of Linus’ presence in Pelican Town, which is the one thing he's willing to admit he wants for.
That said, some players reject this idea because Linus outright states that he dislikes charity. However, he's often willing to accept help that wouldn’t change his lifestyle - he'll gladly accept a player trying to share a mushroom they foraged, but asking him to move onto the farm is too much. Placing a heater on his property is a simple change that barely affects his day-to-day life. It doesn't grant him any material wealth or alter his standing. In unique winter dialogue, Linus even mentions how cold it gets in his tent, suggesting he might be receptive to a solution.
Related Secret Stardew Valley 1.6 Change Makes Its Most Shy Character More Sociable This Stardew Valley NPC usually hides away from the townsfolk, but in the 1.6 update they become a bit more social and appear in the town square.
Linus’ unofficial quest for a heater definitely has a place in Stardew Valley - it can be squared with his character, and allows the player to get a little closer to him than the current version of his storyline. Similar small details, perhaps unintended, have already made it into Stardew canon. So why not this one? It could bring a lot of depth to an overlooked Stardew Valley personality.
