The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke teases Jeffrey Dean Morgan's mystery character in season 4. Based on the comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, Prime Video's satirical superhero series follows the titular team of vigilantes, led by Billy Butcher, who combat corrupt superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities. The Boys season 4, which is set for a three-episode premiere on June 13, introduces a few fresh faces, including Morgan, whose role remains undisclosed, meaning much is still unknown about his character.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kripke started to open up about Morgan's mystery character in The Boys season 4. The showrunner says "he is an old colleague of Butcher's" who "shares a lot of Butcher's concern and hatred of superheroes." Read Kripke's full comments below:
He is an old colleague of Butcher's. I can tell you that he shares a lot of Butcher's concern and hatred of superheroes. It really came from the notion of everyone else in The Boys is always trying to pull Butcher back. So what would happen if he started working with someone who wants to push him forward?
What To Expect From Jeffery Dean Morgan's Character In The Boys Season 4
Close
Morgan is the latest Supernatural star to join The Boys, since the two shows share a creator in Kripke, with other actors including Jensen Ackles, Nathan Mitchell, Adrian Holmes, Christian Keyes, Jim Beaver, and more. However, unlike some of the other actors to make the transition, Morgan already has experience playing a complex, superpowered character – The Comedian in Zack Snyder's Watchmen, an adaptation of the comic by Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore. It's still unclear whether Morgan's mystery character will have superpowers in The Boys season 4.
Other newcomers to The Boys season 4 cast include Susan Heyward as Sister Sage and Valorie Curry as Firecracker, both of whom are Supes.
It was previously theorized that Morgan would play Tek Knight, a prominent character from the comics, in The Boys season 4. However, Derek Wilson was introduced as the billionaire Supe in The Boys spinoff Gen V, ruling out the possibility that Morgan would play him in season 4. According to Kripke, Tek Knight was never considered for Morgan, saying "Once the character that he plays came up, we said, 'Oh! That would be perfect for Jeff.' He was always going to play that character if he was able to swing it."

Morgan believes the role he's currently playing is "a little bit more perfect" for him than the previous roles Kripke considered for him, though he doesn't provide any further details. Kripke's comments do reveal that Morgan's mystery character is an old colleague of Butcher's who shares his intense dislike for Supes. Overall, the concept behind his character, as Kripke explains, is to explore what would happen if, instead of trying to restrain Butcher, someone encouraged and supported his aggressive tendencies. Much more about their dynamic will be revealed when The Boys season 4 premieres.
The Boys streams on Prime Video.
