The Sympathizer season 2 gets a candid update from the producers of the HBO drama, which recently concluded its run. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen, The Sympathizer was created by showrunners Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, with the acclaimed filmmaker Park directing the first three episodes. The cast includes Hoa Xuande, Robert Downey Jr., Toan Le, Fred Nguyen Khan, Duy Nguyễn, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Phanxinê, Kieu Chinh, Alan Trong, and Sandra Oh.
In an interview with TheWrap, co-producers Amanda Burrell and Susan Downey gave an update on the chances of The Sympathizer season 2:
Burrell: “We’re so in love with these characters and I think with Hoa as our are Captain it would be amazing. There’s three books, there’s going to be more, Viet is obsessed with these characters.” Downey: “But we are right now focused on just getting ‘The Sympathizer’ out to the world and seeing hopefully that everybody appreciates it. There’s more story to be told for the Captain’s journey in this world, but right now it’s like anything. I’ve been part of other things that have had sequels, you just have to get the first one right, you can’t look too far past that or you’re going to mess something up.”

There Are More Novels To Adapt

As in the first novel, HBO's Sympathizer series is based on the Captain (Xuande). The Captain, as he's known, is a North Vietnam plant in the South Vietnam army. He flees to the U.S. with his general near the end of the Vietnam war, though he continues to operate secretly as a spy. The story focuses on the turmoil that the Captain has to contend with while living a double life. In the HBO series, helped by Xuande's dynamic performance, this leads to moments of hilarity and also profound sadness.
A sequel novel, titled The Committed, was released in 2021. The story follows the protagonist as he arrives in Paris. Haunted by memories of the Vietnam War, while also struggling to see where he fits in the world, the protagonist takes after the approach of a French intellectual and tries to navigate the complexity of living in a French society.
