After Over A Decade It's The End Of The Line For Cyberpunk 2077
Summary CD Projekt Red has shifted focus from fixing Cyberpunk 2077 to developing new projects like Polaris and Orion.
Cyberpunk 2077 may not receive major updates in the future, but smaller patches for bugs and performance are possible.
Shared Services teams may handle any future performance patches needed for Cyberpunk 2077 under Quality Assurance.
After over a decade, CD Projekt Red finally seems to be closing the door on Cyberpunk 2077. The sci-fi RPG was originally announced in May 2012, with a cinematic teaser trailer following soon after in January 2013, but the title was finally released in 2020, albeit not in the state many expected, as there were many complaints that the game was riddled with bugs, performance issues, or was just completely broken, especially on the Xbox One and PS4 consoles, which were the only console versions of the game at the time, with it being playable through backward compatibility on Xbox Series X/S and PS5, but not receiving a next-gen patch until much later.
Since then, there have been several patches to the game to fix it and add further features, and in the eyes of many, CD Projekt Red has finally fully redeemed Cyberpunk 2077, with it now holding a Very Positive review score on Steam, and winning the 2024 BAFTA award for Evolving Game for the team's dedication to ongoing developer support. However, a new post from the CD Projekt Red X account shows that the studio is ready to move on, as it seems to have reallocated the development teams working on Cyberpunk 2077 to other projects as of April 30, 2024.
The projects that seem to have got a boost from this are Polaris, the upcoming The Witcher game that is intended as "the beginning of a new saga" for the series and is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, and Orion, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 that Game Director Gabe Amatangelo - who helmed the work on Cyberpunk 2077's 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty expansion - confirmed the team was turning its attention towards more fully earlier this year.

There Likely Won't Be Any Major Changes Coming To Cyberpunk 2077 In The Future
But Smaller Patches Could Still Be On The Table For Performance And Bug Fixes
Close
The comments beneath the post immediately highlighted this restructuring would likely result in there being no further updates for Cyberpunk 2077, with some wondering if the current iteration of the game, 2.12 is now considered to be final. Amatangelo had previously stated in a new interview with Game File that while the team is now finally writing off major updates to Cyberpunk 2077 like the gameplay overhaul seen in 2.0, it isn't ruling out smaller updates entirely, saying, "It's possible that there's some other little thing that comes in here or there, just because, as you're kind of messing around with stuff, sometimes you discover something that is not a high risk. Or it's easy to integrate."
This kind of work would likely be carried out now by the Shared Services teams, which received one additional team. This team is listed as looking after Localization, Quality Assurance, Data, Insights & Experiences, and Artificial Intelligence, meaning that they'd probably be the ones looking after any future performance patches if needed under Quality Assurance.
It seemed inevitable that eventually, CD Projekt Red would move on more fully from Cyberpunk 2077, especially with so many games in the pipeline, including a sequel that already has the potential to build upon the improvements made to the original game. It seems like the focus is currently on Polaris with 407 teams working on the project, but Orion is the next largest, albeit with a much smaller number of 56 teams, which makes sense considering a roadmap laid out by CD Projekt Red in April 2024 did state that it was in the Concept stage.
