Darth Maul's New Mission Begins With An Intriguing Republic Mystery
Warning! This post contains a preview for Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #2
Summary Darth Maul ventures to a remote colony in Republic space, as seen in a preview for his next Black, White & Red story.
Maul's surprise arrival to this colony raises questions about his motives and plans for a group of fighters known as The Remainders.
The mission may hint at Maul building an underground network long before the Clone Wars.
Darth Maul's new mission teases an intriguing Republic mystery in the Star Wars canon. Celebrating The Phantom Menace's 25th anniversary in 2024, Marvel Comics' Darth Maul: Black, White, & Blood is a new anthology series starring the titular Dark Lord of the Sith, revealing a collection of never-before-seen tales about Darth Sidious' first apprentice. As such, the upcoming second issue sees Maul venturing to the farthest reaches of Republic space.
In the new preview for Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #2, a remote colony on the edge of Republic space is introduced, one that is home to a group known as the Remainders. Comprised of former bounty hunters, soldiers, and mercenaries, the Remainders run this colony and serve as its protectors. However, this new preview teases that Maul's surprise arrival will lead to some major changes. Preview pages for the upcoming issue can be viewed below:

Ending with the tease that Maul might be taking over this colony in the upcoming issue of Black, White & Red, one has to wonder what Maul wants with the Remainders, especially considering that this new canonical story seems to be set before The Phantom Menace when Maul was meant to be hidden in the shadows while his master continued laying plans for the Sith's revenge.

What Does Darth Maul Want With A Remote Republic Colony?
Will He Fight The Remainders?
It's very strange that Darth Maul looks to be outright revealing himself to a Republic colony in this new preview. No matter how remote it might be, it's certainly a risk to Sidious' plans. There has to be some underlying reason as to why Maul has come to "Moonbender Colony", either to help himself or to somehow further the goals of his master before the events of the Skywalker saga.
Perhaps Palpatine wants the Remainders destroyed with one of them posing a danger to his carefully laid plans. However, it's just as likely that Maul may have plans of his own for this colony and its protectors. After all, it's certainly not out of the question for a Sith apprentice to have their own ulterior motives beyond the purview of their master, especially Maul who canonically struggled waiting for his master's approval to strike at the Jedi and the Republic.
This Could Be The Start of Darth Maul's Underground Network
Before His Clone Wars Shadow Collective
As seen in other canonical Darth Maul stories, the Sith Lord started building a network of informants and agents across the galaxy, even before the start of The Phantom Menace. To that end, perhaps Maul is looking to recruit the Remainders as part of his secret network, the precursor to his Shadow Collective he built during The Clone Wars, itself being a precursor to Maul's very own crime syndicate, Crimson Dawn. At any rate, it will no doubt be fascinating to see what lies in store for Darth Maul's newly revealed mission in the Star Wars canon.
Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 is available May 28th from Marvel Comics.
