Ferrari Family Tree: Everyone In Enzo's Family

Summary The Ferrari film explores family dynamics, portraying Enzo Ferrari's struggles and relationships, adding emotional depth to the story.

Enzo Ferrari's family history, including his parents, wife, and children, plays a significant role in shaping his legacy and personal life.

The legacy of the Ferrari name continues through Enzo's son Piero, who took over the business and still holds a stake in the company today.

One of the key elements of Ferrari is the family dynamics explored in the film; Enzo Ferrari's family is arguably as important as he is in the movie. While the film covers themes of entrepreneurship and innovation, it gets its emotional heart from the characters. When the main characters are introduced, the Ferrari family business is crumbling and on the edge of bankruptcy. Being set in such a time sets Ferrari in a turbulent time when he and his family’s financial struggles are tantamount. This creates strain in the relationships between the main characters, putting weight on every race, and every moment within the critically-acclaimed Ferrari.

At the heart of it all is Enzo Ferrari, the eponymous entrepreneur played by Adam Driver. Ferrari was born in Modena, Italy on February 18, 1898 and was known as a race car driver and entrepreneur. He was the founder of the Ferrari company, as well as the Scuderia Ferrari Grand Prix racing team. He made a career out of these elements until his death in August 1988 at the age of 90. When understanding Ferrari’s life and career, it is important to also understand the people who surrounded him.

Adalgisa Ferrari Was Enzo’s Mother

Adalgisa Lived to Be 93

Adalgisa Ferrari was Enzo’s mother, who is played by Daniela Piperno in Ferrari. Born in 1872, Adalgisa was born as Adalgasia Bisbini before marrying Enzo’s father, Alfredo, in 1896. Not much is known about the life of Adalgisa, but she was the mother to two children, the first being Alfredo Junior (Dino) in 1896 and the second being Dino’s famous brother, Enzo. She lived until 1965, dying at the age of 93.

Alfredo Ferrari Was Enzo’s Father

Alfredo Ferrari Died in 1916

Born in Italy, Alfredo was the son of a grocer from Capri, Italy. Showing his entrepreneurship later passed down through the generations through his son, Alfredo started a workshop for fabricating metal parts that operated from the Ferrari home. In 1916, Alfredo served in the military with his two sons, Dino and Enzo. Alfredo ended up getting the Italian flu that was widespread among soldiers at the time, and passed away as a result. Alfredo died long before the events of Ferrari, which kick off in 1957.

Alfredo Junior (Dino) Ferrari Was Enzo’s Brother

He Also Died of the Italian Flu

Nicknamed Dino, Alfredo Junior was the eldest son of Adalgisa Bisbini and Alfredo Ferrari. He served in the Italian military during World War I. Like his father, he also contracted the Italian flu and died in 1916 at the age of 20. While he did not live to see the growth of his brother’s industry, he had an impact on Enzo. When Enzo had his son (detailed below), he named him Alfredo and called him Dino, honoring his late brother and father.

Played by Penélope Cruz in the movie, Laura Dominica Garello Ferrari was Enzo’s only legally married wife throughout his life. Laura was born in Italy in 1900 and met Enzo Ferrari in the early 1920s. The couple married in 1923 and stayed married, despite having an incredibly tumultuous relationship, up until Laura’s death in 1978 at the age of 78. One of the key characters in the Ferrari film, she provides a lot of emotional weight to the film as she grapples with her son’s death and her strained relationship with protagonist Enzo.

Lina Lardi Was Enzo’s Mistress

Lina and Enzo Had One Son Together

Lina Lardi, who is played by Shailene Woodley in the film Ferrari, was Enzo’s mistress and long-term partner. Though he was married to Laura in 1923, Enzo began an affair with Lina upon meeting her in the early 1930s. The two had a child together, Piero Lardi (later Ferrari), who was born in 1945 and hidden from Laura for years until she eventually found out. Lina plays a key role in Ferrari, as she puts pressure on Enzo to give Piero the family name so he can be their heir to Enzo’s massive fortune.

Alfredo (Dino) Ferrari Was Enzo’s Son

Dino Tragically Died at the Age of 24

Named after his uncle and grandfather, Alfredo Ferrari, nicknamed Dino, was the only son of Laura and Enzo. He was born in 1932 and later trained by his father to take over his car business one day. This legacy was cut short, however, when Dino was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and died at the age of 24. The events of Ferrari take place one year after Dino’s 1956 death when his parents are still deep in grief. He is portrayed in flashbacks in the film at ages 3 and 7, played by young actors Edoardo Beraldi and Gabriel Noto.

Piero Ferrari Is Enzo’s Son

Born Piero Lardi in 1945, Piero was Enzo’s son and the only son between Enzo and Lina. Played by Guiseppe Festinese in the movie, he is 12 years old when the events of Ferrari begin. He is kept a secret from Laura for years, but she discovers him and his mother Lina living in the countryside of Modena. At Laura’s request — but much to Lina’s dismay — Piero is barred from the Ferrari family name until after her death. Enzo followed through with this, making Piero a Ferrari after Laura’s 1978 death.

The Ferrari Family Legacy

Piero Ferrari is still living today, at the age of 79 years old. He did indeed take over his father’s business, carrying on the Ferrari legacy after Enzo’s death in 1988. He has been the vice chairman of the Ferrari automotive company since he was elected in 1989. He is also the partial owner of the Ferrari automotive company, inheriting his father’s 10.23% share as the sole owner. He also is said to own part (13.2%) of the Ferretti group. It is through Piero that the Ferrari name lives on.

The Ferrari name also has the chance to continue on through the bloodline, as Piero had one child. That child is Antonella Ferrari, who was born to Piero and ex-wife Floriana Nalin in 1968. Antonella is the only grandchild of Enzo Ferrari, so his bloodline legacy is dwindling throughout the years. That said, the Ferrari legacy still has a couple of heirs left, despite the family’s history of untimely death. It is this heartbreak that brings life to Ferrari, as morbid as the events of Enzo Ferrari’s life may often seem.
