Kalki 2898 AD’s Careful Use Of Religion In Expensive Sci-Fi Movie Explained By Director
Summary Kalki 2898 AD director Nag Ashwin made sure to carefully balances religion with thrilling storytelling in the expensive sci-fi epic.
The movie, inspired by Hindu mythology, reimagines familiar figures as sci-fi heroes in a futuristic setting.
Kalki 2898 AD hopes to start a cinematic universe with a worldwide theatrical release on June 27, 2024.
Kalki 2898 AD director Nag Ashwin has opened up about the careful use of religion in the upcoming sci-fi epic, explaining how the expensive movie maintains respect while also being a thrilling event. The movie is one of the most expensive Indian films of all time, boasting a budget of 600 crore rupees, which equates to around $72 million USD. Kalki 2898 AD's story is also a science fiction reimagining of the Hindu story of Kalki, also inspired by the Kali Yuga. Because of this, familiar mythological figures will appear as sci-fi heroes and villains.
Speaking with Deadline, Ashwin explained how Kalki 2898 AD will maintain respect toward the Hindu religion while also providing an action-packed event for moviegoers. The director said that, while the story will likely resonate for people who know the mythology that inspired it, it can still be viewed as the story of someone learning to control insurmountable power. Check out what Ashwin had to say below:
We can take it as extremely religious or we can take it as the story of somebody who was born with a lot of power, didn’t know what to do with it, and found his mentor in the process. Of course, if you tell it in the Indian context there will be a bit of devotion and emotion, but I feel any story can be dealt with subjectively without bringing a religious connotation.
Why Kalki 2898 AD Is Getting So Much Attention
Given the subject matter of the movie and how it's settled into a sci-fi setting, it makes sense as to why the film is garnering so much attention. The latest Kalki 2898 AD trailer revealed a de-aged version of star Amitabh Bachchan, who portrays Ashwatthama, showing just how much expensive technology went into crafting the sci-fi epic. With this just being one part of the much larger, complex story being told, it seems the high budget of the movie is one key draw to its popularity.
However, the religious aspects Ashwin talked about are also important, the director making it clear he wanted to find a balance between a respectful portrayal and an exciting story. While the story may be inspired by plenty of Hindu stories and figures, it seems the liberties being taken with their portrayal is about respecting the stories within a new setting. This way, the heroes from those ancient stories can be given new life in the unique way a sci-fi interpretation of their stories can offer.
