Game Of Thrones Creators' $160M Netflix Show Is Avoiding Their Controversial Decision From 5 Years Ago

Game Of Thrones Creators' $160M Netflix Show Is Avoiding Their Controversial Decision From 5 Years Ago

Summary Netflix renewed 3 Body Problem for season 2.

David Benioff and D. B. Weiss are focusing on 3 Body Problem's ending after the Game of Thrones finale controversy.

3 Body Problem will likely need at least three seasons to properly tell the trilogy's story.

Game of Thrones produced one of the most controversial series finales in television history, and, thankfully, creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have seemingly learned from their previous mistakes while working on their Netflix sci-fi show. The HBO fantasy drama is an adaptation of George R. R. Martin's popular book series, A Song of Fire and Ice, and it premiered in 2011. Game of Thrones was immediately a hit, receiving widespread critical acclaim and record-breaking viewership numbers. However, by the time the final season came around, the show was far from the spectacle it was at the beginning of its run.

George R. R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice series isn't finished — the author is still working on the sixth and seventh books, with the last one, A Dance with Dragons, published in 2011.

As the Game of Thrones seasons went on, Benioff and Weiss began running out of source material to adapt (especially because of Martin's elongated delay in publishing more A Song of Fire and Ice novels). As a result, the show started to go downhill, and season 8, the show's last, was undoubtedly its worst set of episodes. Many believed that Game of Thrones' ending was unjustified and disappointing and that several characters' endings were illogical. However, Benioff and Weiss are trying to avoid repeating their past mistakes in their 2024 Netflix series.

D&D Focusing On 3 Body Problem's Ending Is A Relief After Game Of Thrones' Finale Controversy

Many Were Frustrated With Game Of Thrones' Ending

Following their Game of Thrones run, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss put all their energy into developing 3 Body Problem for Netflix (alongside Alexander Woo), and after the show's season 2 renewal, it appears Benioff and Weiss are heading in the right direction concerning the ending. 3 Body Problem is based on Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past book series, with season 1 adapting the first novel, The Three-Body Problem. The show premiered in March 2024 and received positive reviews. Consequently, Netflix renewed 3 Body Problem, and Benioff, Weiss, and Woo released a statement on X that read:

"We're thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion. Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu's magnificent trilogy, we hoped we'd be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!"

The Game of Thrones creators are focused on adapting the entirety of the Remembrance of the Earth's Past series, including the ending, meaning they can tell a complete (and planned) story, unlike how they approached the HBO show. Benioff and Weiss weren't thinking about Game of Thrones' series finale seasons ahead of time, which undoubtedly played a part in the show's decreased quality. Benioff and Weiss could have continued Game of Thrones, but they rushed to give it an abrupt and unsatisfying ending. So, it appears they're rectifying their past mistakes by focusing on sticking the landing with 3 Body Problem.

How Many Seasons Netflix's 3 Body Problem Would Need To Give The Show A Proper Ending

There Are 3 Books In The Remembrance Of Earth's Past Series

Since Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past series contains three novels and season 1 covered the first book, the Netflix show needs at least three seasons to tell the trilogy's story. 3 Body Problem season 2 will likely adapt the second novel, The Dark Forest, and if Netflix renews it, season 3 could depict the third and final book, Death's End. However, David Benioff previously mentioned that the third installment has much more material to work with than the first two. So, Death's End may need to be split into two seasons, resulting in 3 Body Problem containing four seasons total.

Game of Thrones is available to stream on Max, and 3 Body Problem can be found on Netflix.
