Stardew Valley Player Discovers Trigger For Annoying 1.6 Update Glitch
Summary Prismatic Shards and other valuable items can mysteriously vanish after Stardew Valley's 1.6 update.
The bug appears to be connected with the new Big Chest item.
ConcernedApe will likely release a patch for this soon, but players may be better off avoiding Big Chests in the meantime.
Like all good updates, the Stardew Valley 1.6 patch comes with a handful of bugs. Though ConcernedApe has been relatively diligent about putting out patches following 1.6's release as players work through all the new content added to the game, one Stardew player figured out why their Prismatic Shards and other valuable items have been mysteriously disappearing.
Reddit user ClassyLassieRed noticed that every time they manually placed their Prismatic Shards in a Big Chest on their farm, they were gone by the morning. The user reported this issue happening a handful of times, once while transferring items from a regular Chest to the Big Chest, and again when restarting a day, despite the Prismatic Shard being in the Chest on their first playthrough of that day.
Prismatic Shards are a particularly difficult item to obtain, requiring the player to go to the desert and battle their way through Skull Cavern. But it seems like this glitch isn’t affecting only prismatic shards – apparently no item placed in a big chest is safe from being spontaneously deleted.

Stardew Valley Players Report Items Disappearing From Big Chests
Big Chest Is A New Item In Stardew Valley 1.6
While ClassyLassieRed noted this issue primarily affecting their Prismatic Shard stack, the comments on the post are filled with other users reporting various items disappearing from their Big Chests. Cloth, Solar Essences, Coal, Moss, and even tools have been disappearing from Big Chests in this new update. Thankfully, if tools go missing, they can be retrieved from the lost and found in Mayor Lewis’s home, but it’s still a troublesome bug for players who are just trying to get the most out of their storage.
The Big Chest is a new addition to Stardew Valley, added as part of the 1.6 update. While the in-game storage Chests typically hold 36 stacks of items, the Big Chest offers about twice the storage space with 70 item slots. For anyone who likes to horde their resources, these Big Chests are a game changer and drastically reduce the amount of space needed for storage.

For those who want to take the risk, the Big Chest recipe can be purchased from Robin’s Carpenter’s Shop for 5,000 gold and requires 120 Wood and two Copper Bars to craft. To make transitioning storage easier, players can place the Big Chest on top of the regular Chest or the Stone Chest to replace it and immediately transfer over all the items inside.
For now, it may be best to keep all high-value items in regular or Stone Chests until this issue is patched – especially a player’s stash of Prismatic Shards. Now that the glitch has been caught, it likely won’t be long before ConcernedApe patches it up, but for those restarting their save file to take advantage of everything in Stardew Valley 1.6, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
