Netflix's most anticipated upcoming original TV shows include many exciting animated shows, as well as new seasons of popular series. The rise of Netflix and other streaming services has coincided with an uptake in serious animation, constituting many animated shows of epic proportions. These shows tell bigger stories, some of which are specifically marketed toward adults, breaking away from the outdated presumption that animation is best for children.

Following the success of TV shows like Castlevania, Netflix has several more anime-style series planned. This is in addition to the streaming service's contribution to stylized 3D animation, illustrated by its smash hit Arcane. Several planned shows are video game adaptations, constituting an intersection of two major movie and TV show genres that have blown up in recent years, while others are adaptations of different source material. Overall, fans of Netflix's animated originals will have plenty of new things to watch for the foreseeable future.

9 Gears Of War TV Show

Close

Possibly hoping to replicate the success of Arcane, Netflix's next video game adaptation is likely to be Gears of War. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is planning a movie and an animated show based on Gears of War. Nothing has been said about the animation, but other Netflix series in development have confirmed that they will be in the style of anime, so it can be assumed that the show will utilize some kind of 3D animation. Nothing else is known about the in-development show, other than that it will presumably depict humanity's battle with the Locust Horde.

8 Heaven's Forest

Netflix ordered another epic fantasy, anime-style series from the team behind Castlevania and Powerhouse Animation in 2019. According to Deadline, "Heaven’s Forest is set in an Indo-futuristic world, with storyline and characters inspired by the Indian mythology of the Ramayana." Sadly, fans of Castlevania will have to wait sometime before Heaven's Forest premieres on Netflix, as it will likely prove to be another worthy addition to the streaming service's repertoire. It has already been several years since this announcement, with the team busy with Castlevania, and it will take even more time to produce a quality show.

7 Untitled Martin The Warrior TV Show

Close

In the wake of more and more fantasy TV shows adapted from popular novels, Netflix is trying something different with a new Redwall adaptation. Brian Jacques' children's fantasy series about heroic mice and other animals was previously adapted into an animated series in 1999. Now, Netflix is planning a new show, based on Martin the Warrior, the sixth book in the Redwall series. Development on the Martin the Warrior show has been stagnant for some time, with no confirmed showrunner or even animation style to date. However, it will presumably be more family-friendly, given the tone of the source material.

6 Untitled Alex Hirsch TV Show

Close

Alex Hirsch gained widespread recognition for his hilarious and enigmatic brand of creativity in Disney's Gravity Falls, a short show that was conceptualized with only a two-season story in mind. The influences of Gravity Falls can be seen in subsequent fantasy shows The Owl House and Amphibia, both created by veteran Gravity Falls storyboarders. Little is known about the story, tone, or even intended audience of Alex Hirsch's new show in development at Netflix. However, it is a guarantee that old Gravity Falls fans are on the edge of their seats, waiting for news.

5 Charlie And The Chocolate Factory Miniseries

Close

The medium of the previous live-action movie adaptations of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory clashed with the psychedelic nature of the story.

Following Netflix buying the rights to Roald Dahl's works, an animated Charlie and the Chocolate Factory miniseries created by Taika Waititi is on the horizon. This is in addition to a Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator miniseries, based on the sequel to Dahl's famous book. Presumably, these two shows will be connected and possibly produced back-to-back. The medium of the previous live-action movie adaptations of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory clashed with the psychedelic nature of the story — an animated version, driven by Waititi's colorful vision, promises to be a stronger adaptation.

Following the conclusion of the John Wick saga, Reeves plans to star in a live-action movie adaptation of BRZRKR. Meanwhile, Reeves is the showrunner for an anime Netflix series that will be a spinoff of the movie. A testament to Reeves' popularity and talent, Netflix has already confirmed two seasons (via IGN). It may be years until it arrives, but at least there will be other BRZRKR material to pass the time.

Jobling's series follows a 16-year-old who discovers upon his coming of age that he is the last in a long line of werewolves and the rightful ruler of his kingdom. Netflix is not ready to let go of the TV show that is most associated with its binge-watching culture and transformed the landscape of TV. With the final season of Stranger Things coming soon, the Duffer Brothers have confirmed that they will continue the franchise with an animated TV show. The Stranger Things animated series may be called Stranger Things: Tokyo, set in the title city, but it is not entirely clear if the two titles are the same. However, the lasting influence of Stranger Things certainly cements this mysterious new series' place as one of Netflix's most exciting upcoming animated shows.
