Nintendo Direct June 2024 Predictions: Which Games Are Most Likely
Summary The June 2024 Nintendo Direct won't discuss the Nintendo Switch successor, likely focusing on remasters and remakes like Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D.
Metroid Prime games could get some time at the Direct, while other possibilities include a new Donkey Kong and game updates.
Managing expectations is key, as the Direct should be exciting but isn't likely to contain constant surprises.
Nintendo Directs can be some of the most exciting events in gaming, but they can be equally hard to predict. Nintendo isn't exactly known for sharing information ahead of time, and major game releases are often only announced a few months before they launch. Even the Directs themselves can come as something of a surprise, but one is known to be landing in June 2024, a stream to be excited for among the bustle of game news, announcements, and releases that surround the Summer Game Fest event.
Aside from the June window, the other key piece of information for this Direct is that the Nintendo Switch successor won't be discussed during it. Consequently, any major titles in development that are being held for that console's presumed 2025 launch will sadly be skipping the event. Even with those omissions, however, there are still some possibilities that could make the Direct a memorable one, and there's room for the Switch to go out with a bang instead of a whimper.

The June 2024 Nintendo Direct Might Focus On Remasters
Big IPs Could Receive News
The one game with the most concrete support for a Direct appearance at the moment is Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D, a remake of a Japanese RPG classic in the style set by games like Octopath Traveler and Star Ocean: The Second Story R. Prominent leaker Midori noted this inclusion on Twitter, confirming elsewhere in the same thread that it seems to be a full-fledged remake of the original Dragon Quest trilogy rather than just the third game. This particular project has been in development for a long time without many updates, so seeing it at the June Direct could be exciting for fans.
In terms of major new first-party titles, it seems more likely that Nintendo will revisit past hits than announce new franchise entries. Mario, in particular, has been all in on remakes and remasters recently, with Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Luigi's Mansion 2 HD joining the new title Princess Peach: Showtime! to keep the ball rolling. It consequently seems like Mario might already be well-stocked for the year, but the company might look elsewhere, like to the Wii U remasters of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess that have been begging for Switch ports.
The announcement for this Nintendo Direct was accounced by company president Shuntaro Furukawa on the official Nintendo Twitter account.
Zelda could very well still be a pipe dream, however, and Nintendo might be saving even remasters to give the Switch successor something in the franchise at launch. Another viable contender is a Fire Emblem remake, with rumors surrounding a return of the classic Genealogy of the Holy War for years. The grand ambition of Genealogy's story could be refreshing after the lackluster writing of Fire Emblem Engage, so getting an updated version could be a treat.

Metroid Could Appear At The June 2024 Nintendo Direct
Fans Have Been Waiting
Putting too much faith in a proper Metroid Prime 4 reveal has proven a poor strategy for years now, as development troubles have kept it out of Directs ever since its announcement in 2017. That being said, the sunset of the Switch as Nintendo's primary console seems like a logical time, so it could definitely appear. All the same, it might end up getting pushed to a multi-platform launch on both the Switch and its successor, like Breath of the Wild did with the Wii U and Switch, or it could end up transitioning to a Switch 2 exclusive altogether.
Keeping with the remake and remaster push, a bundled remaster of the second and third Metroid Prime games could be a June Direct candidate, even if they don't receive the same amount of work as the remaster of the first did. A Switch version of the 3DS game Metroid: Samus Returns would also make sense, but the Prime games feel like they might be higher on the priority list.

Other IPs That Might Be At The June 2024 Nintendo Direct
Close
Nintendo Directs always feature some coverage of games that are already on their way, so updates on games like Luigi's Mansion 2 HD seem likely. Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Level-5's Professor Layton and the New World of Steam are a couple with planned 2025 windows that could show off gameplay for the first time. Hollow Knight: Silksong making a showing would be the update of dreams for many fans, although it's best to never put too many eggs in that basket.
Silksong recently received content ratings in multiple regions, so even if it's not at the Nintendo Direct, it should be getting an update soon.
The one completely new franchise game that seems like a viable June Direct contender would be a new Donkey Kong, something that's been rumored to be in the works for the Switch for a while. Donkey Kong isn't Nintendo's leading platformer IP, so the Switch getting another game starring the gorilla before the Switch 2 dives back into 3D Mario territory would make sense.
Outside of new games, a reveal of a Nintendo Selects library for the Nintendo Switch would be a nice announcement, and it doesn't feel out of the question for the June 2024 Direct. Cheaper re-releases under the Select banner late in a console's lifespan have been a Nintendo standard for a while, and if it's ever going to happen on the Nintendo Switch, it needs to happen now. Considering reports of a Switch 2 delay after a planned launch in 2024, introducing some Selects could be an easy way to help fill the gap without new offerings.
Related Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Continues An Awful Nintendo Tradition Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door being on Switch is a great thing, but it comes at a cost that's still a little unfortunate for everyone.
It's always best to manage expectations for game announcements, and among the exciting possibilities for new games, it's likely that most won't end up appearing. One or two truly exciting reveals, along with updates on previously announced titles and third-party games can make for a good showcase nonetheless, and there's no way that Nintendo won't be preparing something of interest for the holiday season. The June 2024 Nintendo Direct is rife with opportunity, especially in the case of potential remasters and remakes for the Switch.
