It Might Finally Be Time To Invest In A Meta Quest 3

Summary Meta Quest 2 users are content with their devices, but the Quest 3 library growing in 2024 could spark upgrades for longevity.

High profile AAA VR exclusives like Alien: Rogue Incursion and Batman: Arkham Shadow launching on Meta Quest 3.

Quest 3 games library is already solid, and players can carry over purchases from Quest 2.

The Meta Quest 3 has been around for a while now, having launched in October 2023 as a successor to the Quest 2, but with a smaller design, improved processor, better speakers, and higher resolution. The Quest 3 also started adding more mixed-reality features to the experience to blend virtual and real-world environments, but many Quest 2 users have been content with their devices - the Quest 2 was only released three years prior and still holds up extremely well for VR after all - and therefore haven't felt the need to upgrade, and VR, in general, has been somewhat overlooked.

In 2024 that seems to be changing, however, as the Quest 3's library grows. Meta has discontinued its official support for the Quest 1 as of March 6, 2024, limiting social features for games and ceasing updates or Puzzle Packs on the system, which led to the closure of launch titles such as the beloved free virtual reality pet app, Bogo, and popular multiplayer shooter titles, Dead and Buried and Dead and Buried 2 on March 15, even on later Quest devices. Meta has stated that it will continue to support the Quest 2, and with several major price drops for the device lately, those who have bought it recently will hopefully get some longevity out of it. Still, with there being just over a year between the Quest 1 and Quest 2's launches, the question is how long Meta's support will last.

2024 Is Seeing Some High Profile Quest 3 Exclusives

Is Meta Already Moving Away From The Quest 2 With Its New AAA Releases?

Two extremely high-profile franchises are launching AAA VR titles this year, Alien with Alien: Rogue Incursion, and Batman: Arkham Shadow, the latest in the acclaimed Batman: Arkham series. While Alien: Rogue Incursion is also launching on PSVR2 and Steam VR, it was noted that it would be "native to Meta Quest 3 only" when it releases in the Holiday season later this year. Batman: Arkham Shadow's announcement also revealed that it would be exclusive to Meta Quest 3, eschewing earlier Quest platforms and the likes of Steam VR and PSVR when it launches.

Both titles are major additions to the Quest 3's games library, as Alien: Rogue Incursion will be the first Alien VR game and is bound to evoke memories of the first-person survival horror title Alien Isolation. The title is also being developed by VR veteran studio Survios, which previously worked on the likes of Creed: Rise to Glory, The Walking Dead: Onslaught, Raw Data and many more.

Meanwhile, Batman: Arkham Shadow is being developed by Iron Man VR developer Camouflaj and Oculus Studios. Considering Camoflaj's work on Marvel's superhero title, which featured aerial combat and an array of flight mechanics, the studio could finally bring to life the feeling of gliding over the streets of Gotham and fighting its criminals in a VR title after the series' previous venture into the medium was more detective-focused due to the movement limitations of older VR hardware.

A better look at Batman: Arkham Shadow has been confirmed to appear at Summer Game Fest 2024 on June 7 at 5pm ET.

If such prolific studios think it's time to shelve the older Quest hardware to create the best possible version of their games, other developers will likely begin to follow. If so, this could significantly limit the number of future AAA releases on the Quest 2 and Quest Pro in the coming years, regardless of whether Meta continues to support the platforms or not.

There's Already A Solid Library Of Games On The Meta Quest 3

And These Can Be Carried Across From The Quest 2

Close

While both Batman: Arkham Shadow and Alien: Rogue Incursion won't be releasing for some time, there's already a solid library of titles on Quest 3 if players do choose to upgrade beforehand, and any Quest 2 purchases are carried over provided they log in with the same account they had used for their previous device. Many titles to date have been compatible across the Quest 2 and Quest 3, with titles such as the massive RPG Asgard's Wraith 2 and the history-hopping action-adventure title Assassin's Creed: Nexus being optimized on the newer hardware.

Therefore, while the Quest 2 may appear to be the much cheaper option at the moment with Meta's many price cuts - and is certainly a good introduction to VR for those who are on the fence about it - as more major exclusives begin to be released for the Meta Quest 3 starting this year, it's certainly worth looking to purchase or upgrade to the newer device instead for the sake of longevity and getting the most out of it going forward.
