Star Wars Confirms Every Rebel Hero Has At Least Two Things In Common

Star Wars Confirms Every Rebel Hero Has At Least Two Things In Common

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars #46

Summary Every Rebel has 2 moments of clarity: seeing the Empire's evil & realizing Imperial oppression is intolerable.

Mon Mothma's moments include witnessing the cruelty of a single Imperial officer and later joining the Rebellion outright.

Similar moments of clarity occur for other Rebel heroes, including Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, and Luke Skywalker himself.

Mon Mothma confirms the two moments every Rebel shares in the Star Wars canon. Set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Marvel's canonical Star Wars series is currently wrapping up a crisis where Mon Mothma was briefly kidnapped by mercenaries and was held for ransom before the Alliance was able to rescue her. However, Mothma kept herself more than busy, having a critical dialogue with one of her captors.

As seen in Star Wars #46 by Charles Soule and Madibek Musabekov, one of the Scarabi mercenaries who kidnapped Mothma during a campaign seeking Rebellion aid asks about her background, and how Mon went from an Imperial senator to a key leader of the Alliance. In response, Mon Mothma claims that there are two moments of clarity every Rebel hero experiences before joining the Alliance. To that end, Mothma herself experienced the very same moments of clarity in her past:

All in all, it certainly seems as though Mothma is correct. Every Rebel experiences both a moment when the Empire's evil is exposed and subsequently, a second moment where they can no longer tolerate the idea that Imperial oppression is the norm.

Mon Mothma Reveals The Moment She Understood The Empire's True Evil

Taking Whatever They Wanted From The Galaxy

Having loved a rare kind of peach as a child, Mothma discovered later in life when she was already a senator that an Imperial officer attempted to hoard the fruit for himself. When he was denied, he ordered his troopers to decimate the orchards, deciding for the entire galaxy that the fruit would never be tasted again. As such, this is the moment for Mothma when she saw the Empire for what it truly was.

Additionally, the second moment of clarity where Mon finds Imperial oppression intolerable and joins the fight is currently being shown in Andor. In the first season, Mothma was already secretly financing the operations of Rebel cells while still a member of the Imperial Senate. As such, it's only a matter of time before she flees Coruscant and joins the Rebellion outright as one of the key leaders of the Alliance, a transition for Mothma that will likely be shown in Andor's second season.

Mon Mothma Is Right About Every Rebel In Star Wars

"Two Moments Of Clarity"

Close

The same moments of clarity are just as evident for other Rebel heroes across the Star Wars timeline. Having seen the Empire's true evil as a child, Jyn Erso finds the Imperial regime intolerable after learning the truth about her father just before his death in Rogue One. The same moments of clarity happened for Cassian Andor, as well as for Luke Skywalker after discovering his aunt and uncle who'd been slain by the Empire, motivating his decision to join Obi-Wan Kenobi and later join the Rebellion.

However, the most striking moments of clarity often occur in those who once loyally served the Empire such as Inferno Squad's Iden Versio or Tala Durith, each having moments where they saw or even participated in the Empire's cruelty and could no longer be part of the Imperial machine in the aftermath. As such, it's fascinating to take Mon Mothma's "two moments" model and apply it to different characters throughout the established Star Wars canon.
