Barry Pearl Had A Cameo As Mr. Weaver In Grease: Live
Pearl & The New Doody Actor Became "Fast Friends"
In 2016, Barry Pearl returned to the world of Grease in a new capacity, appearing in Fox's Grease: Live as Mr. Weaver, a talent agent. At 66, he was too old to reprise his role as Doody, but his desire to be part of the live TV adaptation led to a creative solution. "I wanted to be involved," Pearl told Lancaster Online of the TV remake that starred Aaron Tveit and Julianne Hough. Pearl added:
"We submitted the idea of doing cameos (and) my agent promoted it. They (the producers) wrote back that they liked the idea."
Jordan Fisher, who played Doody in Grease: Live, quickly bonded with Pearl. Fisher and Pearl became friends after Barry filled in for a role during the Aladdin pantomime at the Pasadena Playhouse (via Just Jared Jr). Fisher commented: "I said then we needed to work together and two years after that I’m reprising a role he is so famous for." Pearl added:
“That was the genesis of our friendship. We became fast friends and boom here we are together doing this amazing thing.”
Fisher also commented on how influential Pearl was to him in the original movie:
“This is incredible for me because I watched this man a decade before I even made my first trip to Los Angeles. Seeing him was one of my first musical experiences, so to be able to watch the film as a kid and be able to dream of doing something like that one day…”
Though Doody doesn't have any songs in 1978's Grease, Fisher sings "Those Magic Changes" in the musical.
Pearl's cameo in Grease: Live and his mentorship of Fisher bridged the gap between the original Grease film and its contemporary adaptation. Fisher's performance brought a modern flair to Doody, while Pearl's involvement added a layer of authenticity and continuity, linking the past and present of the beloved musical.
