8 Best Power Rangers Characters Who Didn’t Appear In The Original Show
Summary Power Rangers saw the rise of memorable characters beyond MMPR.
Introducing characters from different corners of the universe added depth to Power Rangers' shared universe.
Unique characters like Leo Corbett and Eric Myers brought fresh perspectives to the series compared to the "teenagers with attitude" from the original series.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers still defines the franchise more than 30 years later, yet some of the best Power Rangers characters of all time never appeared in the original show. Despite the plot holes and the retcons, Power Rangers has had a strong sense of continuity since 1993. The Power Rangers chronology stars with Mighty Morphin and currently ends with Cosmic Fury, with dozens of teams and countless characters in between. Naturally, there have been several great characters since MMPR, but a few of them stand out from the rest.
Mighty Morphin ran from 1993 to 1995.
There are some connections between Rangers who were not in Mighty Morphin and the original heroes like Tommy and Jason. For example, the second generation of Turbo Rangers was briefly mentored by Tommy and his team before the passing of the torch, whereas Zordon trained the In Space Red Ranger. After the death of Zordon, connections between new Rangers and the Mighty Morphin ones became rarer, though the show continued to see the debut of great characters.

8 T.J. Johson From Power Rangers Turbo

Replacing Tommy Oliver as the Red Ranger was no easy feat, but T.J. Johson from Turbo was up to the task. T.J., like the rest of the second generation of Turbo Rangers, was introduced midway through the show when the current cast was about to leave the series. While Zeo followed Mighty Morphin, Turbo was when the show really tried to change things. After following the same set of heroes for years, it was time for viewers to meet new Power Rangers. Tommy, Adam, Anya, and Kat were replaced with T.J., Carlos, Ashley, and Cassie.
T.J. was the face of a new era for Power Rangers, one that would lead to one of the best seasons of the show – Power Rangers in Space.
Turbo is widely considered one of the worst Power Rangers seasons, but it gets much better once the new Rangers arrive. As iconic as Tommy Oliver and the other Zeo Rangers were, Power Rangers had spent several years with those characters already. The show had become repetitive, with some storylines and running jokes being as old as Mighty Morphin’s pilot. T.J. was the face of a new era for Power Rangers, one that would lead to one of the best seasons of the show – Power Rangers in Space. T.J. would then go from Red to Blue.
7 Andros From Power Rangers In Space
First appeared in 1998

Often listed as one of the best Red Rangers ever, Andros was unlike any other characters Power Rangers had ever featured. Instead of a high schooler from Angel Grove, Andros was a mysterious humanoid alien from a planet known as KO-35. Although he knew Zordon, Andros had no idea who the Power Rangers of Earth were. The Turbo crew had to learn how to cooperate with someone they didn’t know, whereas Andros had to accept he was now working with a team and not as a lone Ranger.

The idea of introducing a character who was already a Power Ranger in the first episode of the new series set In Space apart from previous seasons and made Andros a fan-favorite from the start. The fact that Andros first appeared as he infiltrated a meeting of all Power Rangers villains, from Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd to Divatox, made the character even cooler. Andros became one of the faces of Power Rangers’ 1990s era and would later return for crossovers in Lost Galaxy and Wild Force.

6 Astronema From Power Rangers In Space
First appeared in 1998

Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd were iconic antagonists, but the best Power Rangers villains were not in Mighty Morphin. An apprentice of Dark Specter, Astronema was trained her entire life to be the Princess of Evil. However, the series later reveals that Astronema is Andros’ lost sister. Karone was kidnapped when she was a child and brainwashed into believing she had no family left. By the time the Red Ranger realized Astronema was his sister, it appeared to be too late to save her from Dark Specter. Astronema’s eventual redemption was great, but she made for an incredible villain regardless.

Astronema’s classic “Destroy them” line set the tone for In Space, which raised the bar for Power Rangers in terms of overarching storylines and villains. Rather than just fighting a monster every week, the In Space Rangers had to locate Zordon while also trying to find a way of bringing Andros’ sister back. At the same time, Astronema was plotting to betray Dark Specter and take over as the ruler of the universe. Before she was redeemed, Astronema led the Alliance of Evil on an attack against Earth in what was by far Power Rangers’ best season finale.
A redeemed Karone became the second Pink Ranger in Lost Galaxy.
5 Leo Corbett From Power Rangers Lost Galaxy
First appeared in 1999

Power Rangers would never be the same after the death of Zordon in “Countdown to Destruction.” Lost Galaxy was the first series following the end of the “Zordon Era,” which referred to everything that happened between MMPR and In Space. For the first time since the inception of the series, Power Rangers had a new season that was not directly tied to Zordon and the original heroes. While Lost Galaxy included Bulk and the Astro Megaship, the latter of which was the home of the In Space Rangers, it had little to no connections to the previous seasons.
Related Why Power Rangers’ Most Iconic 1990s Villain Never Appeared On The TV Show One of the most popular Power Rangers villains never returned after his first appearance and was never featured in the TV show or the current comics.
Lost Galaxy’s unique approach can be summarized by Leo Corbett’s character, someone who had probably never heard of Zordon or Alpha. Leo was not even supposed to be a Power Ranger and only became one after his brother, Mike, died right after he wielded one of the Quasar Sabers. Leo never actually removed the Quasar Saber from the magic stone in which they were kept, meaning he never felt like he deserved the role of Red Ranger. Even still, Leo made for a fantastic leader and is among the greatest Red Rangers of all time.

4 Carter Grayson From Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue
First appeared in 2000

Similar to Lost Galaxy, Lightspeed Rescue went for a very different approach compared to the Zordon Era shows. Rather than “teenagers with attitude,” the Rangers were now adults with jobs. The Lightspeed Rescue team was formed by firefighters, doctors, pilots, and athletes, all of whom would now use their skills to help people as Power Rangers. Carter Grayson, who was a firefighter before he became a Ranger, is a rare example of a Power Ranger who was born ready for the job. While Carter did have to learn a few things, he was a natural leader.

The Lightspeed Rescue Red Ranger was a hero long before he was a Power Ranger. Carter was putting his life on the line for others every day as a firefighter and brought a lot of his previous experiences to his Ranger career. Few Red Rangers were as efficient and trustworthy as Carter, whom many considered to be the quintessential Red Ranger. Carter treated his Red Ranger role as duty, yet he was never too harsh on or cold with his team. Quite the contrary, Carter was also a good friend. He would later return in Lost Galaxy, Wild Force, and Super Megaforce.

3 Jen Scott From Power Rangers Time Force
First appeared in 2001

The first and so far only Pink Ranger to lead a Power Rangers team, Jen Scott had to face some difficult circumstances during Time Force. Following the death of the Red Ranger, who also happened to be her fiancé, Jen entered a path of revenge against the mutant Ransik. When Ransik escapes from prison and travels back in time to 2001, the Time Force Rangers have to start a new life in the past. Jen had to step up as their leader, guiding the Rangers amidst the difficult mission of arresting Ransik and returning home.

Jen’s story is made even more complicated by the fact that the new Red Ranger, a regular human from 2001, looks exactly like her dead fiancé. The dynamic between Jen and Wes is one of Time Force’s highlights and becomes even more interesting once Alex, the previous Red Ranger, is made part of the story again. Unfortunately, apart from the crossover with the Wild Force Rangers, Jen Scott never showed up again in the TV show. Still, Time Force was more than enough to make Jen into the greatest Pink Ranger the show ever had.

2 Eric Myers From Power Rangers Time Force

The Quantum Ranger eventually earned Wes’ respect and vice versa, confirming one of the coolest friendships in the franchise.
The evil Ranger trope had been done several times by the time Power Rangers Time Force premiered, which is why it was so interesting to have an anti-hero as the “evil Ranger” of the season. The Quantum Ranger was never a villain like the Mighty Morphin Green Ranger or the Titanium Ranger, yet he saw the Rangers as an obstacle he had to overcome. Eric believed his ways of doing things were more effective than that of the Rangers, and that he deserved to become the Quantum Ranger.

The fact that Eric and Wes were college friends made their dynamic as Rangers quite interesting. Eric thought that Wes was a spoiled rich kid who did not deserve to be a Power Ranger, whereas Wes thought Eric’s methods and entitlement to be too extreme. A second Red Ranger who acts outside of the main team had never been done in Power Rangers, adding to how special Eric Myers’ character was. The

1 Trent Fernandez From Power Rangers Dino Thunder
First appeared in 2004

A student of Tommy Oliver who is brainwashed by the villains and becomes an evil Power Ranger. Trent, the Dino Thunder White Ranger, could not have been a better legacy character. Everything about Dino Thunder’s White Ranger mirrors Mighty Morphin’s Green Ranger story, from his relationship with the Yellow Ranger to his redemption. It is no exaggeration to say that the White Ranger was far more powerful than the rest of the team upon their first encounter, which portrayed Trent as a menacing force the Rangers would struggle to deal with.

Dino Thunder was full of callbacks to Mighty Morphin, with Tommy Oliver’s return being the biggest one. Whereas the Red, Blue, and Yellow Rangers were considering giving up on Trent after finding out he was the White Ranger, Tommy vouched for Frent. The original Green Ranger, whom Rita Repulsa once brainwashed into fighting his friends, knew exactly what the White Ranger was going through. Ten years after the arrival of the Green Ranger in the original series, Dino Thunder gave Power Rangers one of its best evil Rangers, if not the best.
