All Solo Leveling: ARISE Characters & Tier Ranks Explained

Summary Solo Leveling:ARISE features two tier systems for characters: one based on their strengths as a Hunter, and another based on their rarity for summoning.

Characters in the lore are organized into specific Hunter ranks, ranging from S to E, which are determined by their powers and affect their pay and the jobs they are assigned.

Rarity tiers correlate somewhat with Hunter ranks, but aren't always a perfect match.

Due to the nature of its lore, Solo Leveling:ARISE has a somewhat confusing tier system. All of its playable characters are monster hunters who operate within the confines of an official, ranked system, so each of them is assigned to a particular strata in the popular Solo Leveling anime and manhwa the game is based on. These rankings are usually fixed, but in at least one case, characters are known to be able to move up in levels as they gain power.

However, Solo Leveling:ARISE is a gacha game, and that means characters are also assigned rarities that affect how likely a player is to summon them. Since Solo Leveling:ARISE is faithful to its source, there's some inevitable overlap between lore-based tiers and pull rarities, but they're not always a perfect match. Here's how both stats work, how they line up with one another, and why players need to pay attention to them.

Solo Leveling Characters Are Organized Into Power-Based Tiers

Close

First, every character in Solo Leveling:ARISE is sorted into a rank based on their strength as a Hunter. The Solo Leveling manhwa, anime, and video game are set in a world in which monsters pose an ever-present threat to humanity. In an effort to defend against their attacks, people can become Hunters - awakened beings with magic powers. These powers give Hunters a fighting chance against deadly monsters, but they also allow them to close the gates that monsters use to travel between the human world and the enigmatic dungeons in which they originate.

Borne out of the necessity of defending people against monsters, a worldwide, billion-dollar industry was developed to organize and compensate Hunters. This industry sorts Hunters into ranks based on the strength of their powers, using a standard system in which the S-rank represents the strongest Hunters, and the E-rank the weakest Hunters. Rankings affect how much each Hunter is paid, as well as what kind of jobs they're called up for. Most Hunters fall into the lower tiers, as the kinds of powers that necessitate an S or A ranking are uncommon.

Normally, each Hunter only awakens to their powers once, at which point they're permitted to test for a license. It's at this point that they're assigned a fixed rank; most Hunters remain at the same rank for their entire lives. Some Hunters undergo reawakenings, in which they discover powers they were previously unaware of, or find that their pre-existing powers were stronger than they previously thought. In these cases, they can go up in rank - but reawakenings are exceptionally rare.

However, the protagonist of Solo Leveling, Sung Jinwoo, has certain abilities that allow him to change ranks in an unprecedented way. As he defeats monsters and gains experience, Jinwoo can "level up" much like a video game character, regularly growing in power and increasing his rank as a result.

The following table lists all the playable characters confirmed for Solo Leveling:ARISE so far, organized by their Hunter ranks. Characters' Hunter ranks don't necessarily affect their in-game stats or rarity, but as the developers were aware of how ranks worked when they designed the characters and their abilities, there's some inevitable overlap. However, in an effort to ensure all characters are viable, some lower-rank Hunters may appear more powerful in Solo Leveling:ARISE than they do in the anime or manhwa.

Pulls, Banners, Wishes, & Pity

Separate from their Hunter ranks, every Solo Leveling:ARISE character has a rarity tier that determines how likely players are to summon them. As a gacha game, Solo Leveling:ARISE allows players to start with just a handful of characters, then spend in-game currency on pulls to obtain more. Players can spend their pulls on Solo Leveling:ARISE's Selection Draw, which includes the entire roster, or the Limited Hunter Draw, which increases the likelihood of pulling certain characters in limited-time events.

Solo Leveling:ARISE characters are divided into three rarity tiers: Rare (R), Super Rare (SR), and Super Super Rare (SSR), in order from most to least common. There's a flat probability of pulling a character of each rarity on a regular pull: a 90% chance to pull an R, an 8.8% chance to pull an SR, and a 1.2% chance to pull an SSR.

Players can pull for weapons and equipment as well as characters, which are organized into the same rarity tiers.

However, players can also use the Wishing system to select their favorite characters, increasing the likelihood of obtaining them on each pull. Solo Leveling:ARISE also employs a Pity system which guarantees that all players can draw an SSR character eventually. The soft Pity feature activates after 64 pulls. If a player still doesn't have an SSR by then, each subsequent pull will receive a slight increase in the likelihood of returning an SSR character. The hard Pity activates at the 80th pull, rewarding the player with an SSR no matter what.

In general, character rarity tiers correlate more directly with stats than Hunter ranks. Rarer characters tend to be more powerful, which makes them more desirable for recruitment. However, a character's general popularity also affects their rarity, such that more popular, less popular characters may be in higher rarity tiers. The following table shows all characters who have been confirmed for Solo Leveling:ARISE, organized by rarity.

Sung Jinwoo doesn't appear in this table because, as the starting character of Solo Leveling:ARISE, he doesn't have an inherent rarity.

By way of comparison, the table below lists every character confirmed for Solo Leveling:ARISE by both their Hunter rank and their rarity tier, illustrating the correlation between the two stats. It can also help players optimize their pulls: by wishing for lower-rarity characters of higher Hunter ranks, they're more likely to pull characters with better stats.

The double whammy of Hunter ranks and rarity tiers can be confusing at first, but is actually quite simple to understand. Hunter rank only directly impacts lore, but it also has some bearing on character stats and rarity. Rarity and stats are more closely connected, but rarity primarily affects the likelihood of pulling a certain character. None of them directly affect a character's viability, and all characters can be effective with good equipment and the right party composition. Still, understanding and using both of these stats can ensure a smooth experience in Solo Leveling: Arise.
