The modding community expands Baldur's Gate 3 beyond Larian Studios' plans, adding new races and classes for more gameplay options.
Baldur's Gate 3 may already be littered with unique weapons for players to equip to their party but those who want something a little more iconic to the world of fantasy are lucky thanks to a new mod. Through players' adventures across the Forgotten Realms, they'll undoubtedly come across piles of powerful loot to help beef up the stats of Astarion, Shadowheart, Wyll, and anyone else you might need an edge in combat. Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts may recognize some of the more notorious weapons but now it's time for Final Fantasy fans to shine.
Posted to Nexus Mods by user FluffyButt 21, Baldur's Gate 3 fans can now equip Cloud Strife's gigantic Buster Sword, one of the most iconic weapons in any video game, to a party member able to support its heft. Based on a previous mod, this revamped version reworks the blade to be better suited for the RPG's systems, this version of the Buster Sword is Rare and deals 3d6 Slashing damage, up from the previous 2d6. Additionally, it also includes a Focused Thrust ability that sends the user lunging forward akin to how it worked in Final Fantasy VII Remake.

The Buster Sword Is A Fantastic Weapon
Even When It's Not Included In FF7
The mod specifies that Baldur's Gate 3's Buster Sword can be found in the tutorial chest on the Nautilod at the beginning of the game, meaning players who miss it won't be able to acquire it late on in the campaign. The creator notes that this is a nod to the fact that it also serves as Cloud's starting weapon in Final Fantasy 7. While it may be the protagonist's most recognizable weapon, it also doesn't take long for players to discover a superior weapon, meaning the Buster Sword doesn't feature for too long.
That doesn't mean the blade isn't iconic though as aside from Final Fantasy 7 and the Baldur's Gate 3 mod, it's also appeared in a variety of other games. Terraria, Apex Legends, Pocket God, and Astro's Playroom have all played host to the Buster Sword in some way or another, although the title and appearance are often slightly tweaked. There's even speculation that the weapon inspired a key action scene in the DC movie Blue Bettel which features the hero wielding a similarly shaped sword.
While Larian Studios has confirmed that it has no further plans to expand upon Baldur's Gate 3, the community is still hard at work creating new mods that further flesh out the game. Fans have developed many additions that expand the core experience, even going so far as to add new races and classes based on Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition. With the forthcoming launch of official mod support on consoles, only time will tell what else the player base will create.
