Under the Bridge simplifies the cast by leaving out Nadja and Anya, leading to changes in the overall story and character dynamics.
Riley Keough's character, Rebecca Godfrey, replaces two crucial people from the Under the Bridge true story, causing major changes to the story. The Hulu miniseries is a dramatization of the true story of Reena Virk's murder. While Under the Bridge does align with the major facts of the case, it dramatizes many of the smaller aspects of the story. Some of these changes include erasing Josephine's relationship with her mom and Kelly having Reena's boots instead of Josephine.
However, the series also introduces bigger changes that have more influence on the story. One of the biggest changes involves the author Rebecca Godfrey. While the author did come to Saanich in order to research the murder of Reena Virk, she wasn't a direct part of the case like what's depicted in Hulu's Under the Bridge. In order to give her a bigger role, they removed two real-life people who had an important role in the Reena Virk case.

One of the biggest changes from Rebecca Godfrey’s Under the Bridge is the omission of the real-life sisters, Nadja and Anya. Nadja and Anya were placed in different foster homes, with Nadja arriving at Seven Oaks the day after Reena Virk’s death. Upon arrival, Josephine admitted to her that she attacked Reena and a friend drowned her. She and her sister Anya meet up and discuss this bizarre moment, deciding they must go to the police. From this point forward, they have a hand in the investigation; however, Hulu’s Under the Bridge switches them out with the author-insert, Rebecca Godfrey.
According to the book, Nadja and Anya were the first two people to tip off the police about the murder of Reena, like Rebecca does with Cam in the Hulu series. Nadja and Anya were the two people who took Josephine under the bridge in order to find out what happened. Nadja felt it was their responsibility, since the police didn’t seem to care.

The sisters asked Josephine inquiring questions, trying to get as much detail as possible. This mirrors Rebecca’s method of getting information out of Jo. Both the sisters and Rebecca take follow-up information to the police afterward. Anya even offered for them to help the police, taping phone calls while talking to the people involved. While the sisters' help was turned down by the police in real life, Rebecca offers to help in Under the Bridge, and Cam takes her up on the offer.

In reality, there was a large amount of variance in loyalty and morality among the teenagers in Saanich, Canada.
The choice to leave out Nadja and Anya from Hulu’s Under the Bridge had multiple narrative benefits. Firstly, by switching Rebecca with the sisters, the author has a stronger connection to the case. Secondly, the series needed to follow fewer teenage characters, simplifying the cast of Under the Bridge. However, there was one major consequence of leaving out Nadja and Anya. Hulu’s Under the Bridge presents the teenagers as being a group that’s willing to defend one another at all costs.
In the miniseries, none of the teenage bystanders who know about the crime feel confident coming forward about the crime. This remains true even when they learn about the murder in Under the Bridge, not just the attack. Nadja and Anya felt a stronger sense of justice than individuals like Josephine and Kelly, who hid the truth at all costs.
