Invincible voice star Ben Schwartz confirms Shapesmith's return in season 3. After a long delay, Invincible season 2 came back to Prime Video with a greater focus on the lives of Mark Grayson and his mother Debbie. But even as it paid special attention to the show's main characters, it also expanded the show's supporting ensemble. That includes Shapesmith, who initially came across as an antagonist but gradually proved himself to be surprisingly heroic.
In an interview with Screen Rant's Grant Hermanns, Schwartz confirmed that Shapesmith would return for Invincible season 3. The actor also shed light on his familiarity with the Invincible comics and reflected on the Martian's heroic turn during the final four episodes of season 2. The full quote is below:
I remember when Robert Kirkman told me what the character is — I wasn't aware of him in the graphic novel of the comics, but I'm a huge fan of that show, I think Invincible's so good — he said, "Hey, do you want to play this character?" He told me kind of what it was, I was like, "Oh my God, this is so fun." Not only does he have these "Plastic Man abilities", or Elastic Man, or Mr. Fantastic-type of stretching abilities and morphing abilities, but he is hiding that he's really an alien who's trying to pretend that he's a human. So, he's trying to fool everybody, but 100% doesn't fool. The second you hear him talk, he just overdoes it. So, I get to play comedy, and I also get to play these beautiful scenes of saving the day. In the last four that they released, there's this gorgeous fight scene where you see Shapesmith really stand up for the team. I'm excited to keep going too. He's still around, he hasn't bitten the dust yet, so I get to keep playing him until whatever part of the storyline takes him to a place where maybe he's not around anymore, but hopefully he stays for a long, long time.

In the Prime Video show, however, Shapesmith demonstrates his heroism after a bumpy beginning.
Shapesmith actually makes his first appearance during season 1, episode 4, "Neil Armstrong, Eat Your Heart Out." The character appears as Mark Grayson is saving astronauts. Given that Grayson is preoccupied with his role as Invincible, he doesn't notice that Shapesmith is leaving Mars and that he's left behind one of the original astronauts to be infected. A clue to Shapesmith's identity in the quick scene is that the American flag on his spacesuit is inverted.
In the comics on which Invincible is based, the story of Shapesmith is much the same. He's a Martian, using his metamorphic abilities to disguise himself as the astronaut Rus Livingston and fight crime. He becomes a member of The Guardians of the Globe eventually. In the Prime Video show, however, Shapesmith demonstrates his heroism after a bumpy beginning. At the risk of his own safety, he helps the Guardians and Invincible during a crucial mission.
