Since Robinne Lee's debut novel of the same name hit shelves in 2017, there's been speculation that The Idea of You is a fictional spin on Grammy-winning musician Harry Styles' life. Although The Idea of You isn't Harry Styles fanfiction, it does boast a fun connection to Styles' former boy band, One Direction. One of the best-selling boy groups of all time, One Direction shot to super stardom after landing a spot on The X Factor in 2010. The boy band's members — Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Styles — were considered teen idols.

Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), one of the key characters in The Idea of You's cast, bears a striking resemblance to Harry Styles, from his collection of tattoos to his desire to be a solo artist. Plus, Hayes' ultra-popular boy band, August Moon, feels like a One Direction stand-in, especially since the band is big enough to headline Coachella. At the film's start, Solène Marchand (Anne Hathaway) is tasked with taking her daughter, Izzy (Ella Rubin), to the music festival, which unexpectedly brings Solène into Hayes' orbit and begins The Idea of You's age-gap romance.

Eagle-eyed viewers and One Direction fans who watched the credits after The Idea of You's happy ending may have spotted an obvious link between the fictional August Moon and 1D. Savan Kotecha and Carl Falk, producers and songwriters behind some of One Direction's biggest hits, also penned August Moon's songs in The Idea of You. Savan Kotecha has worked with huge names like The Weeknd, Lizzo, Ariana Grande, and Usher, while Carl Falk has written for Nicki Minaj and Madonna. Together, the duo crafted One Direction's debut single, the chart-topping "What Makes You Beautiful."

Falk, who also has credits on One Direction's "One Thing" and "Happily," spoke with GQ about the dual excitement and challenges of making songs by a fictional band. The songwriting duo had to embody August Moon from afar. In a sense, it's not too dissimilar from ghost-writing music for other artists. Much like Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine's steamy chemistry, the songs had to feel authentic and storied. For The Idea of You, the duo wrote the radio hit "I Got You," as well as the bops "Tastes" and "Guard Down," and the deep-cut "Closer."

Reflecting on the experience of writing August Moon and Hayes Campbell's songs, Koetcha has said that One Direction didn't really come to mind when he was working on the tracks for The Idea of You. In hindsight, he admits that the comparisons are obvious, though he also remembers thinking that the team very specifically "[didn't] want it to be a Harry Styles fanfic movie." However, parallels continue to be drawn, in part because Nicholas Galitzine's real singing in The Idea of You infuses the music with a real authenticity — one that feels akin to both 1D and Styles' work.
