Within Star Wars: Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special #1, Shmi Skywalker, Anakin's mother, has finally received a happy ending. Known for being a major motivation for her son becoming a Jedi, Shmi is one of the prequel trilogy's most tragic characters. Now, she has been depicted with a more positive memory on Tatooine.

Star Wars: Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special #1 has the creative team of Greg Pak, Will Sliney, Guru-eFX, and Joe Caramagna. The special revisits the story of a film, but adds some new short tales to the mythos of Anakin's choice to become a Jedi.

It shows more of his personality and his dreams, highlighting his positive characteristics as a child. This reveals how much potential he had in his youth, as well as why he may have been so upset at his mother's death at the hands of Tusken Raiders.

Anakin Skywalker's Good Deeds During Phantom Menace Era Revealed

Within the 25th anniversary special, Anakin is seen saving a Tusken from becoming a slave like he and his mother are. Later, one of the nomads - likely the same one Anakin freed - visits Shmi to share a story about her son while sharing a black melon. Though the shared story is not expressly depicted in an exchange between them, it is highly likely that the Tusken Raider told her about what her son did. It is also revealed that she has had dreams about him becoming a Jedi, before a splash page featuring him concludes that segment of the special.

Having his mother killed by a species he so willingly saved on Tatooine before he left the planet likely would have felt like a major betrayal.

Although Anakin wouldn't see his mother until after her capture and torture by the Sand People, ultimately witnessing her death, this moment during their separation is very heartwarming. In her dreams, she was able to share the dream Anakin had for himself growing up, as a Jedi willing to save and help people. Though he would eventually succumb to the dark side, Anakin Skywalker's progression from enslaved boy to Jedi knight was full of hope and potential. He saved a Tusken from slavery without hesitation and helped Qui-Gon earn money for repairs to continue his work in the galaxy with Obi-Wan.

Shmi Skywalker's Newest Canon Inclusion is Bittersweet

There are several tribes of Tusken Raiders in the deserts of Tatooine, but they are not well integrated into the other societies present on the planet and can be targeted or in conflict with various groups, as seen in other Star Wars media like The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian. Having his mother killed by the kind of species he so willingly saved on Tatooine before he left the planet likely would have felt like a major betrayal. Even so, Shmi Skywalker saw the best in her son in her dreams after he left, allowing her to see him as a Jedi and hero in Star Wars: Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special #1.

Star Wars: Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
