The Handmaid's Tale Season 6's June & Serena Hint Is Destined To End In Disaster
Summary June and Serena's parallel stories spell doom for their friendship in The Handmaid's Tale season 6.
The show can't give both characters happy endings due to the thematic significance of their arcs.
Serena's likely betrayal of June and possible death in season 6 are fitting ends for her character in the series.
Serena and June started a surprising team-up in season 5, but The Handmaid's Tale season 6 is already hinting that this pairing is destined to end in a disaster. The Handmaid's Tale is a truly tragic show, one that has taught audiences that, no matter how up things are looking, the worst is always yet to come. Because of this, it doesn't seem like Serena and June's relationship will make it through the end of The Handmaid's Tale's finals season, with it being doomed to end tragically for one of the two women.
The Handmaid's Tale season 6 is on the way, with the highly anticipated continuation of Hulu's critically acclaimed dystopian show now closer than ever. As it turns out, The Handmaid's Tale season 6 will be the show's final season, wrapping up the stories of June and the rest of the gang. While The Testaments spinoff series will continue the world of the franchise, June and Serena won't be the focuses of The Handmaid's Tale for much longer, with it being possible that one of their stories could end really badly in the upcoming batch of episodes.

June & Serena's Parallel Stories Mean The Handmaid's Tale Can't Give Both Happy Endings
Close
June and Serena have evolved into incredibly interesting characters in The Handmaid's Tale season 5, with the duo having parallel stories. While June was a prisoner of Gilead who wanted nothing more than to escape to Canada, Serena is now a prisoner of Canada who wants to escape back to Gilead. June was an infamous figure in Gilead, while Serena is an infamous figure in Canada. Most obviously, Serena's arc of wanting to raise her son Noah perfectly parallels June's arc of wanting to get Nichole out of Gilead. Thus, the two characters are thematically linked.
While the parallel arcs of June and Serena are incredibly interesting, this storyline means that The Handmaid's Tale can't give both characters happy endings. Due to the similarities in their stories, having both of them end up in a good place would make these parallel arcs pointless, as the story needs to use their positions at the end of the show to juxtapose their different arcs for a thematic purpose. Having June and Serena both come out on top at the end of the series would be a weird choice, while giving one a tragic ending makes sense.
Why Serena Joy May Betray June In The Handmaid's Tale Season 6
Close
Due to the events of the previous five seasons, it only makes sense for Serena Joy to betray June in The Handmaid's Tale season 6. Although a partnership between the two characters was built up in season 5, Serena has shown time and time again that she is a completely self-interested character. Because of this, it makes sense for her to undercut June in order to protect what she wants, whether that be the safety of her child or her return to Gilead.
It would be very difficult for The Handmaid's Tale to fully redeem Serena, as much of the show is dedicated to showing just how awful of a person she is. Undoing four and a half seasons of horrible acts in just a season and a half would be a near-impossible task for The Handmaid's Tale to pull off. Instead, it would make more sense for Serena's arc in The Handmaid's Tale season 6 to be a failed shot at redemption, showing that she failed at changing for the better due to her history with Gilead and her relationship with Noah.
Will Serena Joy Die In The Handmaid's Tale Season 6?
Close
Another option for Serena Joy's arc would be to kill her in The Handmaid's Tale season 6. Since The Handmaid's Tale book only covers up to the end of The Handmaid's Tale season 1, it is impossible to predict what will happen to Serena at the end of the show, as she does not die in the book. However, it would be fitting for season 6 to kill her off, with this seeming like a good way for fate to get revenge on the character.

Serena Joy doesn't appear in The Handmaid's Tale spinoff book The Testaments, meaning that her usefulness to the franchise will probably be done after season 6. Although the show could change things, it doesn't seem like anything will be lost if Serena is killed in the final season of The Handmaid's Tale, meaning that this is a possibility for the show's future.
