Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #150! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have just come to the end of their most intense storyline to date, as the stakes have truly never been higher than they were during the Road to 150. While TMNT fans can now breathe a sigh of relief that the Turtles made it out of this one, they didn’t exactly do so in one piece, as one of their siblings made the ultimate sacrifice to save the rest.

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #150 by Sophie Campbell, Vincenzo Federici, Fero Pe, and Dan Duncan, the Road to 150 officially comes to an end - and it’s epic. Leading up to this point, TMNT's Donatello and Venus have been traveling through time, tracking Armaggon before the time-consuming shark erases the Turtles from existence. They discover that the only way they can stop Armaggon is by tricking them into consuming a magical sigil that will take away the shark’s cosmic powers, reducing Armaggon to a regular mutanimal/cyborg.

Close

Donatello and Venus travel to feudal Japan, before the Turtles were reincarnated as turtles to begin with, back when they were still humans. Armaggon was going to disrupt the reincarnation process from the source, but the two TMNT members were able to cut the cosmic villain off, beating them to that point in time. When Armaggon finally arrived, Donatello - holding the sigil in his hand - was going to allow Armaggon to consume him in order to ensure the creature’s destruction. However, right as Donnie is about to make the ultimate sacrifice, Venus does so instead.

TMNT’s Venus Sacrifices Herself to Stop the Seemingly Unbeatable Armaggon

Throughout the Road to 150, Donatello and Venus are continuously told by others who’ve tried to defeat Armaggon that the villain is a cosmic inevitability. Armaggon is unbeatable, they were told, and there was no point in even trying to destroy them. Older versions of Donatello (who became a master of magic), Raphael (who became a Cable-esque cyborg warrior from the future), and even an older version of Venus herself all tried and failed to stop Armaggon.

These encounters during the Road to 150 event were the reason Donatello and Venus’ mission seemed so bleak. If these seasoned warriors who have been trying to stop Armaggon for years couldn’t do it, how could they? Their mission seemed hopeless, but rather than give up, Donnie and Venus pressed onward. And in the end, Venus did the one thing none of her siblings could before her, as she valiantly gave her life to destroy Armaggon once and for all.

Venus’ Sacrifice is the Perfect Conclusion to Her Long and Arduous TMNT Story

Venus returned to TMNT’s prime continuity in issue #127 of the IDW Publishing series, and here, at the very end of the Road to 150, it has come to an ultimate end. While sad, Venus meeting her end in this storyline is absolutely perfect.

Venus made her official TMNT debut in the ‘90s live-action series Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation, but her inclusion was met with harsh criticism from fans, so her tenure as a Turtles sibling ended with that show. Sophie Campbell revived the character in the coolest way possible for IDW Publishing, allowing her to reclaim her story and truly make an impact as a member of the TMNT. Now, with Venus giving her life to ensure the TMNT were even born in the first place, she’s gone from being a Turtle fans wanted to forget, to one they will always remember.

There has always been nothing but pain and shame in Venus’ past. From the meta-sense of fans hating her in Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation, to her in-world past in IDW Publishing continuity having been experimented on by a insidiously cruel mutant mad scientist. Venus has always had a rough go of it, no matter how one looks at her story. Yet despite her pain-filled past, Venus becomes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ ultimate hero, as her sacrifice is marked by the literal end of an era, and the beginning of something new.
