Bob Hearts Abishola Season 5 Ending Reflected On By Star After Emotional Series Finale
Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Bob Hearts Abishola series finale!
Summary Billy Gardell wished Bob Hearts Abishola could've had more seasons to fully develop season 5's story.
The series finale of Bob Hearts Abishola provided a satisfying conclusion despite possible additional storylines.
Bob Hearts Abishola left an imprint with a satisfying ending, despite concluding after season 5.
Bob Hearts Abishola star Billy Gardell has reflected on season 5 of the show being its last following the emotional series finale. Co-created by The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, the show follows its two titular characters throughout the years as they fall in love, eventually getting married. Before season 5 aired, it was announced this would be the last for the show, offering a proper conclusion to the story in spite of its early finale.
Speaking with TVLine, Gardell, who plays Bob, explained how the final episodes of Bob Hearts Abishola made him wish the show could have gone on for more seasons. The actor expressed interest in having season 5's story fleshed out over the span of a greater length of time, but also said he was grateful for his time on the series as a whole. Check out what Gardell had to say below:
I think we’re leaving on a high note — definitely. But it would have been nice to do one or two more seasons, to see us at that place [we land in the finale]. But what’s that old saying? Don’t be sad it’s over, be grateful it happened? I can truly say that I feel that way about this show, even though I think we could have gone one or two more seasons. But look, that’s not in our control. I told these guys, having been through it once with Mike & Molly, to cherish every moment. Because as Folake [Olowofoyeku] was saying earlier, it’s going to end. It’s ending, so let’s spend our time wisely here. Let’s spend our time building something. This show went five years, through a pandemic and through a strike, and I really think it had some magic dust on it because it left an imprint. And now we’re going to be in syndication, and I think more people are going to find this show, and I hope it has the impact on them that it did on me.
Did Bob Hearts Abishola Have A Satisfying Ending?
Bob Hearts Abishola is one of two Lorre-created series on CBS closing its doors in May, with Young Sheldon season 7 ending that series as well. However, the recently-finished comedy had a clearer ending in sight, with news breaking prior to cancellation that all cast members except Gardell's Bob and Folake Olowofoyeku's Abishola would have reduced, recurring roles. This alteration was made in April 2023, with the show's final season being announced in November. However, this gap of time allowed for the development of a satisfying series finale.
The final episode of the show takes place following a seven-year time jump, with Bob now retired and Abishola one of Detroit's best pediatricians. What follows is an epilogue of sorts, focusing mostly on the main couple while also checking in with some of the most prominent characters in the story. It ends with a series of flashbacks from across the show, offering a satisfying conclusion that reveals how happy the pair are - and how much more deeply in love they are with each other.
While it would have been interesting to see more of what happened during the time jump with an extra season or two of the show, Bob Hearts Abishola still managed to deliver a satisfying finale for its core couple. The show could have told plenty of additional stories, though, making its definitive ending all the more bittersweet. However, with Lorre's next project being Bookie season 2 on Max, the producer still has plenty of comedic stories to tell - even if this latest one had to end.
All episodes of Bob Hearts Abishola are now streaming on Paramount+.
