The first reboot movie of the series was Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which was released back in 2011. Kingdom takes place many years after the events of the third film, War for the Planet of the Apes (2024), which featured Andy Serkis in the lead role of Caesar.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes releases in theaters on May 10, 2024, with early access screenings beginning on Wednesday, May 8. The screenplay was written by Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds, Avatar: The Way of Water, Foundation), and is based on characters created by Rock Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The production budget for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is unconfirmed but is rumored to be around $120 million. This is notably less than the $170 million budget of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the $150 million budget of War of the Planet of the Apes. By comparison, Rise of the Planet of the Apes was made for $93 million. Wes Ball spoke to The Direct, saying "I think, [it was a] pretty sizable [difference]. I think the studio is very happy that we did the movie responsibly. And that's just the nature of the box office going down. We’re not going to spend as much on these movies."

That's twice the budget, which should help it break even. Anything higher than $240 million will be profit. The highest-grossing installment of the rebooted franchise was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which earned more than $710 million worldwide. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes should hope to make more than Rise, which earned just under $471 million worldwide, to be considered an undeniable success.
