Iron Man vs Spider-Man Flips Their MCU Relationship in Marvel's New Continuity

Iron Man vs Spider-Man Flips Their MCU Relationship in Marvel's New Continuity

Summary In the new Ultimate Universe, Spider-Man and Tony Stark clash as their MCU roles of mentor and mentee are reversed.

The two heroes may overcome initial strife to join forces against the Maker's Council's sinister plans.

With Peter as a paternal figure and Tony as a young hero, their dynamic in this new continuity is complex and evolving.

Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe is finally bringing Peter Parker’s Spider-Man together with Tony Stark under circumstances that completely contrast their MCU dynamic. Though Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man mentored Tom Holland’s teenage Peter in the movies, Tony Stark is a young Iron Lad in Earth-6160. With an older Spider-Man who just got his powers in the same universe, their established relationship could be totally flipped in this new continuity.

In Marco Checchetto’s cover for Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #8 by Jonathan Hickman and Checchetto, Earth-6160’s Peter and Tony finally clash for the first time. The villainous Maker's Council has blamed an attack that killed Aunt May and Norman Osborn in this universe on the young Tony Stark, so it appears their meeting will start violently.

Kingpin gathers a team to deal with his masked-vigilante problem… But a group of super villains isn’t the only challenge Spider-Man will face! Meanwhile, Green Goblin joins forces with…Doc Ock?

However, Spider-Man will presumably join forces with Iron Lad and the rest of the Ultimates after some initial strife, especially since Tony even offered Peter the choice to be bitten by the radioactive spider. As their worlds collide in all-new ways, the context of their relationship is shifting.

The Ultimate Universe Flips the MCU’s Iron Man/Spider-Man Relationship On Its Head

Close

With Peter Parker as the more mature character in the new Ultimate Universe and Tony Stark being a young adult, their relationship will be vastly different from the semi-paternal mentorship of the MCU’s Iron Man and Spider-Man. Tony may not need any mentoring from Peter, though, seeing as he's put together the six-month plan to re-establish all superheroes in his universe. Though it would be interesting to see Peter being an influential figure to Tony after Howard Stark’s death, Earth-6160’s Iron Lad still has some solid superhero experience, while the adult Peter has only recently gotten his spider powers.

Peter could still act as a paternal figure to Tony, especially seeing as he and Mary Jane actually do share two children in this universe, including a daughter who knows Peter’s Spider-Man secret. With Tony having recently lost his father, and the impending risk of becoming the future’s Kang the Conqueror, a positive relationship with Peter could keep Iron Lad a hero in the Ultimate timeline. With the Maker's Council at large and all the pieces of the universe coming into place, the heroes will have to work strongly together to save Earth-6160.

Peter Parker Has a Complicated Web to Unravel in the Ultimate Universe

As Tony and the Ultimates unravel disturbing information about Damage Control in Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri’s Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man/Ultimate Universe story, there are hints that Peter’s life will get even more complicated. Damage Control was part of the conspiracy to keep superheroes suppressed, and Mary Jane revealed that she’s been on retainer for the sinister company during a double date in Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #4 by Hickman, Davis Messina, and Matthew Wilson. With Peter’s wife and the mother of his children supposedly involved with an evil corporation, Tony could suspect that Mary Jane cannot be trusted.

The relationship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark became an integral part of the MCU after Tom Holland’s Spider-Man debuted in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, and it informed a lot of audience perception of the characters’ dynamic overall. With the heroes of Earth-6160 and the six-month superhero plan all coming together, Peter and Tony’s connection will be redefined yet again. As an older and paternal Spider-Man crosses paths with a younger and messier version of Iron Man, one of Marvel’s most well-established alliances will get a creative overhaul in the Ultimate Universe.

Ultimate Spider-Man #8 will be available August 21 from Marvel Comics.
