Godzilla x Kong's success could reach new heights for the franchise after ten years

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be hitting shelves this summer. The movie is the latest installment in the Monsterverse, the Legendary franchise that brings together some of world cinema's most iconic monsters. Directed by Adam Wingard and starring Rebecca Hall, Dan Stevens, and Bryan Tyree Henry, the movie follows a new threat emerging from the hollow Earth that forces the titular monsters to band together once again after forming a tentative truce at the end of the previous movie, 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong.

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has announced that the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire release, which premieres on VOD on May 14, will hit 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on June 11. This summer will also see the release of a 5-film 4K UHD collection of the entire Monsterverse so far, which includes a sixth disc dedicated to special features. Godzilla x Kong Has A Landmark Release

Releasing a collected special edition package for Monsterverse might seem slightly premature, considering the fact that the franchise is still going on strong. In fact, Wingard has reportedly already signed on to make a new movie in the franchise, though it has not been officially announced if it will be a Godzilla x Kong sequel. However, there are several reasons that summer 2024 is the right time for a Monsterverse 4K collection.

Adam Wingard also directed Godzilla vs. Kong, making him the first director to ever return to helm a second movie in the Monsterverse.

The first and most important reason for this is the fact that it is the tenth anniversary of the Monsterverse franchise. After kicking off with Godzilla in 2014, the series has now expanded to include five blockbuster movies and two streaming shows, including Apple TV+'s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which premiered earlier in 2024 and has already been renewed for season 2. While the two shows will not be included in the 4K set, the success of Monarch shows that the franchise is reaching new heights a full decade after it began.

There is also the matter of the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire box office. The movie is a smash success and has so far grossed more than $500 million worldwide, surpassing 2014's Godzilla to become the second highest-grossing movie of the franchise so far behind 2017's Kong: Skull Island. It remains to be seen if it can climb high enough to become the No. 1 title of the franchise, but its success marks a turning point for the franchise, which hasn't had a hit at this level in seven years.
