Red Vs. Blue's Matt Hullum On Halo & Star Wars
Summary Rooster Teeth co-writer Matt Hullum discusses the end of Red Vs. Blue and his hopes for the future of the Halo series.
Hullum compares Halo to Star Wars, suggesting branching out to explore new corners of the universe like Reach and ODST.
Fans could see more Halo projects outside of Master Chief's story, similar to Star Wars spin-offs exploring different perspectives.
When discussing the conclusion to Rooster Teeth's long-running Red Vs. Blue, the show's co-writer, director, and voice actor, Matt Hullum talked about the game franchise it started life as a machinima of: Halo. Red Vs. Blue has been around since the very first Halo game, starting in 2003 a year before the release of Halo 2, and so the team at Rooster Teeth has experienced the release of every Halo game both as fans and using the titles to create their content.
As Red Vs. Blue comes to an end after 21 years with the feature-length Red Vs. Blue: Restoration, Hullum spoke in an exclusive interview with Screen Rant about what he would like to see from the Halo series going forward as a fan. As well as expressing a fondness for all of the games in the series, with Halo 3 as a personal favorite, Hullum also compared the franchise to another sci-fi icon, Star Wars, saying:
It'd be interesting to see if the games connect with the TV show in a big way or, you know, other things like that happen. To me, Halo is like Star Wars, you know, it's that big of an idea and a universe, and I think there's just so much more that they could continue to do in other places, other areas, with other teams like you had with Reach, and other things like that where you just keep going and expand and find new corners of that really cool universe to explore.

Should More Halo Projects Branch Out From Master Chief's Story?
There Have Already Been Other Games That Explore The Wider Halo Universe
Close
While the main stories in the Halo series have focused on John 117, also known as Master Chief, there have been other titles without the iconic Spartan at the forefront. As pointed out by Hullum, the last Halo game made by Bungie, Halo Reach told the story of Noble Six during the Fall of Reach, 20 days before the series' first title Halo: Combat Evolved. Bungie also put players in control of an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper during the events of Halo 2 in Halo 3: ODST's story to give yet another perspective on the game's universe.
Both Halo Reach and Halo 3: ODST were well-received by players and critics, getting 91 and 83 scores on Metacritic, respectively.
This would be similar to the various Star Wars spin-offs such as Rogue One, Andor, The Mandalorian, and the upcoming Star Wars Outlaws video game, which all take place outside of the main episodes that form the Skywalker Saga. These titles further explore different corners of the Star Wars universe and offer perspectives that aren't those of the Jedi, but rather fellow rebels, bounty hunters, and outlaws that inhabit the same worlds around those events.
With these parallels in mind, Hullum's comments would make a lot of sense for the future of the franchise and could provide even more worldbuilding outside of Master Chief's story, especially with fans' criticism surrounding some of the directions the series has taken with this narrative, following what could have been a strong finale for him in Halo 3. Regardless of what comes next, Hullum stated that he would be "waiting for it as a fan like everybody else" following Red Vs. Blue's satisfying finale in Restoration.
