The Breen Have Technology The Federation Does Not

The Breen have one of Star Trek’s most memorable arcs. The Breen were mentioned for many years on both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. They were not seen, however, until Deep Space Nine’s fourth season, in the episode “Indiscretion.” The Breen made sporadic appearances until the show’s final season, when they joined forces with the Dominion. These appearances established the Breen as a major power, with weapons capable of seriously damaging Federation starships. The Breen also wore armor, which obscured their appearance. The Breen’s true appearances were just revealed on Star Trek: Discovery.

Deep Space Nine revealed the Breen had energy-dampening weapons, as well as cloaking devices. Cloaking devices, such as the ones used by the Klingons or the Romulans, are governed by treaties in the Star Trek universe. For instance, the Romulans may use them but the Federation (in most circumstances) is prohibited from having cloaking devices. The Breen do not recognize any such treaty, and have taken the tech a step further by creating personalized cloaking devices. If cloaking tech on ships is rare, then a personal version is even rarer.

Despite playing a huge role in the Dominion War, the Breen are still largely mysterious, and their radical new cloaking technology also makes them one of Star Trek’s most dangerous as well. With this device, the Breen could infiltrate key weapons and scientific bases, gaining access to classified research. The Breen could also use it to sabotage diplomatic negotiations and carry out assassinations. The Breen already has an aura of mystery, and this only enhances it. The applications for a personal cloaking device are many, both for combat and espionage–and these advantages belong to the Breen.
