Marvel's Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special adds new canon moments such as Qui-Gon's lessons for Anakin, enhancing the first chapter of the Skywalker saga.
Star Wars has revealed new Jedi teachings from Qui-Gon during the events of The Phantom Menace. A maverick who often kept his own counsel and defied the will of the Jedi Council, Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi became central figures in the Trade Federation's conflict with the Naboo as seen in the first Star Wars prequel movie. However, things became much more complicated when Qui-Gon discovered a powerful young boy on the desert world of Tatooine.
Set before, during, and after the events of The Phantom Menace, Marvel Comics' new Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special #1 by Greg Pak and Wil Silney features never-before-seen and canonical moments, adding new context and insights into the iconic first chapter of the Skywalker saga. This includes new moments between Qui-Gon and Anakin, including a scene when the young boy asks if he's dangerous following the Jedi Council's hesitation to approve Anakin's training. He'd also overheard Obi-Wan voicing his shared concerns with Qui-Gon as well before they left Coruscant.
Confirming the potential of his gifts, Qu-Gon reassures Anakin by confirming that Jedi are called to control their emotions and powers for the good of all. The standards of the Jedi and how they carry themselves are high, and Qui-Gon expresses his belief that Anakin has what it takes to become a great Jedi with the proper training.

Qui-Gon Made Sure Anakin Knew What Being A Jedi Truly Meant
The Jedi Path Isn't An Easy One
This Phantom Menace issue also saw Qui-Gon and Anakin sharing a new moment back on Tatooine. After Anakin wins the Boonta Eve podrace and the prize money to help fix the Queen of Naboo's ship, Qui-Gon asks Anakin how it feels to have helped so many people by doing what many couldn't have done. While Jinn tells Anakin that the young boy should enjoy that he was able to do good and help others, he also confirms that the next steps will be far more difficult than winning a podrace.
Sharing with Anakin his intention to train him as a Jedi, Qui-Gon ensures that Anakin knows exactly what becoming a Jedi means. Confirming that the Jedi path requires both intense discipline and sacrifice, Qui-Gon is pleased when Anakin expresses his desire to help people no matter what, including making the sacrifices needed to become a Jedi, such as leaving his mother and life on Tatooine behind (though he wouldn't realize the full extent of the sacrifice Qui-Gon was hinting at until later on in the actual movie).
Qui-Gon Teachings Were Brief But Critical
Obi-Wan Took Over After Qui-Gon's Death
Tragically, Qui-Gon's training of Anakin never truly began after he was killed by Darth Maul. However, the teachings Qui-Gon did share both on and off-screen were still critical for Skywalker nonetheless. They set Anakin on the path he was destined to take, and Obi-Wan Kenobi would come to honor his master's dying wish by training Anakin himself as seen in the subsequent prequel movies. To that end, it's fascinating to see these additional Phantom Menace moments, adding the canonical story and fleshing out what little time Qui-Gon had with the boy he should have trained himself were not for the Sith.
The Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special #1 releases May 1st, 2024.
