The Bad Batch Season 3 Dodged A Bullet With Omega's Star Wars Story

The Bad Batch Season 3 Dodged A Bullet With Omega's Star Wars Story

Summary The Bad Batch season 3 concluded without focusing on Force sensitivity, keeping the spotlight on the clones' stories.

Omega's potential Jedi path was hinted at but not explored, allowing for future storytelling outside The Bad Batch.

Star Wars wisely avoided making The Bad Batch about the Force, prioritizing the clones' journey instead.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3 concluded beautifully, avoiding one Star Wars trend that would have weakened the plot. The Bad Batch season 3 started with a bang, revealing critical new details about Project Necromancer and Emperor Palpatine's resurrection plans, which included using clones like Omega for experiments to create Force-sensitive clones. However, as season 3 was the final season of the show, it also needed to bring an end to Clone Force 99's Star Wars stories.

For much of the season, it looked as though that end would be a grim one, as the Bad Batch team spent almost all of season 3 in precarious situations. However, the Bad Batch season 3 ending managed to pull off one of Star Wars' few truly happy conclusions. Moreover, the show's finale thankfully avoided repeating a recent Star Wars trend that season 3 had seemed to be heading toward.

Force Sensitivity Has Remained Too Important In Star Wars

Although Star Wars has excitingly proven to be moving away from a heavy emphasis on the Jedi, such as in the Andor TV show and the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, the Force remains too large a focus in the franchise. Even in projects that are theoretically not focused on Force-sensitive main characters, Star Wars has begun to pepper in plot twists regarding characters with Force sensitivity. While it can be thrilling for a long-beloved character to reveal Force sensitivity, it could end up being overdone if that plotline is repeated too frequently.

One key example of this trend came about in Ahsoka season 1, when Sabine Wren was revealed to have the Force. This move was highly controversial with Star Wars audiences, as Sabine hadn't demonstrated any aptitude with the Force in Star Wars Rebels. However, this twist was befitting of the true nature of the Force; it has always been true that the Force resides in all living things. Importantly, as many characters have articulated throughout the franchise, the Jedi don't own the Force—they're just more skilled at using it.

The Jedi don't own the Force—they're just more skilled at using it.

The issue only arises if and when too many characters begin having similar arcs. For one, that turn for a main character can easily overshadow the show, with the Force sensitivity plot becoming the main focus. Moreover, while the Force may reside in all living things, if it were to become oversaturated in Star Wars, that would serve only to make it feel less significant for all Force users.

Omega Becoming A Jedi Would Have Detracted From The Clones' Stories

That very possibility, wherein a Force sensitivity plot twist swallowed up the rest of the show, seemed to be impending in The Bad Batch season 3. Early in the season, Omega was revealed to be the only clone whose M-count (or midi-chlorian count) was successfully increased by Project Necromancer. While a higher M-count suggests one's potential in the Force rather than confirms Force sensitivity, Omega then seemed to exhibit several of Star Wars' Force abilities, including increased intuition and stronger bonds with animals.

Luckily, The Bad Batch season 3 concluded having only dropped hints about Omega's Force sensitivity rather than switching gears to a focus on it. Critically, the Jedi and the Force were not what The Bad Batch was meant to be about. Instead, The Bad Batch served as a sequel to Star Wars: The Clone Wars for the Republic's clone troopers who had been left high and dry after Order 66 and the rise of the Empire. Their story, and their story's conclusion, should have been the focus.

The Jedi and the Force were not what The Bad Batch was meant to be about.

Thankfully, Star Wars kept to that focus, as a turn toward Omega being Force-sensitive and perhaps pursuing the path of a Jedi would have seriously detracted from the clones' stories. While the clones are very beloved in the franchise, especially Clone Force 99, it's hard to ignore how much pull the Force has. Often, when a Force-sensitive character is introduced, they become pivotal to the plot, perhaps even more so than other characters.

Omega's Jedi Story Could Be Told, Just Not In The Bad Batch

Ultimately, Star Wars' decision to leave Omega's possible Force sensitivity as a loose end rather than confirm it in The Bad Batch was the right move for the show. However, that doesn't mean that loose end will never be tied up. In The Bad Batch season 3 finale, in fact, Star Wars revealed a time jump to an adult Omega. As the show concluded, Omega informed Hunter that she would be joining the Rebellion as a pilot. Given the Bad Batch finale's place in the Star Wars timeline, this would put Omega in the Rebellion prior to A New Hope.

This could very well mean that Omega will appear in an upcoming Star Wars project. Were that the case, Omega's Force sensitivity could be further explored or revealed later on. However, for Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Star Wars absolutely made the best decision by not allowing season 3 to focus on whether Omega had the Force.
