We Think We've Figured Out The Future Of Star Wars TV
Summary We think that only two live-action Star Wars TV shows will release in 2025, following Disney's new approach with Marvel.
2024 set a pattern with two live-action and one animated series, with another animated show rumored for 2025.
The reduction in Star Wars shows on Disney+ aligns with Disney's shift towards fewer new releases each year.
We think we've finally figured out the future of Star Wars TV. The last few months have been relatively strange for Star Wars, with a dearth of announcements on upcoming TV shows. This is all the more remarkable given there's been a steady stream of new shows on Disney+ since the platform's launch - at least after the disruption caused by the pandemic. Many had assumed something would be announced at Star Wars Day 2024, but that wasn't the case.
The first half of 2024 has seen only two Star Wars TV shows release, and both are animated; Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Star Wars: Tales of the Empire. This year will be rounded out by two live-action shows, The Acolyte and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, both unusual and distinctive series that have less direct ties to the main Skywalker saga than is usually the case. But what's coming next? We think we're finally beginning to figure it out.
Will Only Two Live-Action Star Wars TV Shows Release In 2025?
Disney's new approach with Marvel may be a massive clue

Speaking at a recent earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed he's reducing the number of MCU movies and TV shows coming out each year. According to Iger, Marvel is working through a backlog of content generated under a previous strategy, and will then shift to no more than two new live-action shows every year. It's surely not a coincidence that Star Wars is already following this pattern.
Viewers were more than a little confused when Disney pulled Star Wars: Skeleton Crew from 2023, given it seemed like the perfect Christmas fare and had long been rumored for that slot. This was never explained, but it now looks as though the reason could have been a strategic one, based on the desire to reduce output. It's striking that, because of the Skeleton Crew move, two live-action Star Wars TV shows released last year, and now two are releasing in 2024 as well. That matches with the exact same "rule" Iger has set for the MCU.

We Think We Know What 2025 Will Look Like For Star Wars TV
Two live-action Star Wars TV shows... and two animated ones
If this is the case, then 2024 has set the pattern for Star Wars TV: two live-action TV shows, an animated series, and an animated anthology. Andor season 2 has been moved to 2025 (again, no real rationale was given, but the change in corporate strategy fits). Meanwhile, there's only talk of one other live-action TV show in the works right now; Ahsoka season 2. The first season began filming in October 2022 ahead of an August 2023 release, so there's plenty of time for season 2 - assuming production begins by the Fall.
Meanwhile, Lucasfilm has been alternating the two anthology shows, Star Wars: Visions and Tales, both of which typically release on Star Wars Day. According to this pattern, we'd expect the rumored Star Wars: Visions season 3 to release on May 4, 2025. Another Star Wars animated show is in the works, with Lucasfilm advertising for vacancies over the last few months. So that would round out the year.

Some may be disappointed to hear the number of Star Wars shows dropping on Disney+ looks set for a reduction. But it makes sense of the lack of announcements of late, and it fits well with Disney's current corporate priorities. In truth, Disney+ has always been over-dependent on Star Wars and the MCU, and it's probably for the streaming service to kick that habit. Presumably the 2026 shows will be announced at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Japan - the perfect time and place.
