90 Day Fiancé: Emily’s Mom Refuses To Be Silent After Kobe’s Family Calls Her “Property”

Summary Emily's mom expresses concerns about traditional Cameroonian wedding customs, feeling uneasy with the concept of paying a bride price for Emily.

Kobe's family refers to Emily as their "property," which causes tension with Emily's parents, who are uncomfortable with the idea.

While Emily is married to Kobe and has children with him, her mom struggles to accept the bride price tradition, causing friction among the families.

In the preview of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? season 8, Emily Bieberly's mom discusses a problem with Kobe Blaise's family, referring to her daughter as their "property." Kobe and Emily got married in 90 Day Fiancé season 9 and are now featured on 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? season 8 to share their journey in Cameroon. However, their journey in the latest season hasn't been smooth. Kobe's friends dislike Emily, considering her to be bossy. Besides, Kobe's father pressured the couple to have a traditional Cameroonian wedding ceremony in order to receive their ancestors' blessings.

Planning their wedding according to Cameroonian traditions has become too stressful for Emily and Kobe. Emily's mom is worried about one tradition that involves paying a bride price to Kobe's family for Emily. In a preview shared by ET, she expresses her concerns with Kobe's family, stating, "to me, it felt like we were selling Emily."

Kobe's brother explains that after paying the bride price, Emily belongs to Kobe and their family, which further worries Emily's mom. She says, "it almost sounds like Emily becomes part of your family and is no longer a part of our family."

Emily's Mom Thinks They've Lost Control

Emily's father adds, "the word 'property' is a very difficult word for us." However, Kobe's brother is confused about why Emily's parents are struggling to understand the tradition. Emily's mom further explains, "to call my daughter or any person 'property,' you know, it's equating them to a thing or a possession." During a confessional, she says that Emily is an adult capable of making her own decisions, but "I'm not also going to be silent about how I feel because it feels like my daughter is being bought for a price." Emily's mom thinks they've "lost all control."

Emily's mom's concerns are valid, but it's frustrating to see that Kobe's family doesn't understand her worries. Emily didn't even try to talk to her mother and make her feel heard.

It's wrong for Kobe's family to call Emily their property because it suggests they think of her as a physical object, not a person with emotions and intelligence. Emily's mom comes across as level-headed and has always been respectful to Kobe and his family, which is why, when she has a problem, it needs to be listened to.

It's possible that Emily's mom is overreacting. Emily is already married to Kobe and has three children with him. Since Emily isn't going to live with her in-laws in Cameroon and will return to the United States with them, her mom shouldn't be concerned about the bride price. She could consider the bride price an unusual custom and try to overlook it for her daughter's happiness. However, Emily's parents appear strong-willed; they may not agree with paying for Emily. It would be interesting to see if Emily's mom eventually decides to be silent in 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?.

90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EDT on TLC.
