Fallout 76 Players Nuke Phil Spencer Over Xbox Studio Closures
Summary Gaming community nuked Xbox CEO's camp in Fallout 76 in retaliation to studio closures.
Fans express disappointment and frustration as Xbox loses trust following recent actions.
Fallout 76 incident highlights larger industry issue of studio layoffs and closures.
Fallout 76 players have turned to nuking Xbox CEO Phil Spencer's camp in response to the recent closure of several Xbox studios. On May 7, Microsoft closed Hi-Fi Rush and The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks, Mighty Doom's Alpha Dog Games, and Redfall and Prey's Arkane Austin. It also announced that Roundhouse Games would be absorbed into The Elder Scrolls Online's ZeniMax Online Studios.
One recent act of retaliation has been slightly more light-hearted, but no less pointed than the other comments on the situation, as Fallout 76 players have found Phil Spencer's camp on Fallout 76, named "P3's Camp" and have decided to take out their frustration by nuking it.
This moment has been shared by Sam Snydes on X, who posted a picture of the in-game map with a large red nuclear fallout radius around Spencer's camp. Fellow X user, real1090jake responded to the image taking credit for the act with gameplay footage of him in Spencer's camp interacting with his character.

Xbox Has Lost A Lot Of The Gaming Community's Trust With Its Latest Studio Closures
Its Latest Actions Contradict Past Statements About Its Studios

The in-game nuking of Spender's camp is just one of the many ways the gaming community has been vocal in its disappointment and frustration since May 7, and it has become abundantly clear that Xbox has lost a lot of its audience's trust as a result. The closures shocked both fans and those working at the studio, especially with Microsoft's past claims that Hi-Fi Rush was a breakout hit and that it wouldn't give up on less successful titles such as Redfall, which had DLC content in the works. Of course, currently, the gaming space is no stranger to layoffs, with shocking closures across many established companies. Alanah Pearce, who recently made comments on the state of the industry when presenting the 2024 Game Developers Choice Awards took to X to comment on Xbox's decisions and ask, "If we’re shutting studios making games incredible games like Hi-Fi Rush, Prey, and The Evil Within, then what hope is there for anyone?"
Xbox has recently announced that it will be hosting a showcase in June as part of Summer Game Fest, as it usually does, but following these studio closures, it's yet to be seen how players will react to whatever the company has lined up. Until then, moments like the Fallout 76 in-game retaliation, while it might not do much in the grand scheme, will hopefully offer a brief moment of levity in the whole situation.
