Hades 2: How To Find (& Beat) Headmistress Hecate (Boss Fight)

Headmistress Hecate is the first boss that players will square off against in Hades 2 and acts as the initial guardian of Erebus. Like in the first game, boss fights to cap off each section of the game and are significant obstacles to progression. Even though she acts as the first boss, Hecate holds no punches against her star pupil and sets the tone early on.

Erebus is the first section of the Underworld that Melinoe in Hades 2 must fight her way through. Much to the shock of Melinoe, her first significant foe is her teacher, Headmistress Hecate. Although Hecate harbors no ill will toward Melinoe, she charges her student with defeating her before she can move on to the deeper, much more challenging sections of the Underworld. Mastering Hecate’s fight is essential to progression for both the player and the character.

Best Tips, Tricks & Strategy

In Hades 2, Headmistress Hecate is Melinoe's ally, and her boss fight has three major phases. Hecate starts the fight with a purple ring that expands out from around her. This area-of-effect ability is easy to dodge, but dashing inward to get closer to the target is better.

Once the initial ring dissipates, the Headmistress begins to fire short-range waves of green energy. This attack is fairly well telegraphed, as she charges her staff before releasing the wave. Whenever you see this animation, dash behind her and start unleashing damage.

The second major mechanic is a clone ability, which splits Hecate into three different versions of herself. Depending on the phase you’re in, her attacks will differ. The real Headmistress is hidden among the clones, although there is no surefire way to tell which is real. It’s best to attack the clones nearest you and see if the health drains.

In phase one, the clones attack with short-range fire attacks. In phase two, they launch faster magic spheres. In the final phase, the clones use the pulsing purple ring attack, which starts the fight.

The second phase of the fight begins once Hecate’s health hits around the halfway point. From here, she will go to the center of the boss arena and shield herself. The boss then summons Witches that shoot off ranged spells. All the while, you also need to dodge exploding symbols that begin to appear on the ground.

It’s important to seek out and slay the Witches to end this phase as soon as possible. Once the Witches are defeated, Hecate drops her shield and resorts to the short-ranged and clone mechanics previously discussed, giving ample opportunity to deal further damage.

If you get Hexed, focus entirely on dodging the AoE glyph attacks. The sheep form is much slower than Melinoe but just fast enough to get out of the glyph’s range once it appears.

The final third of the fight is by far the most difficult. Hecate summons even more Witches in this portion but now casts a heat-seeking Hex attack at you. If the Hex hits you, you will transform into a sheep for approximately 15 seconds. The sheep form moves incredibly slowly, and you still must dodge exploding glyphs constantly appearing.

The Hex won’t stop until it hits something, so try to position yourself around one of the many trees in the boss arena. At this point in the fight, your cast abilities and dash attacks will become imperative to ending the fight.

Best Boons For Beating Hecate

The Goddess of the Flame, Hestia, has the best boons to defeat Headmistress Hecate. Hestia is one of the new Gods and Goddesses in Hades 2 introduced in Hades 2 that will bestow boons upon Melinoe. Many of Hestia’s boons include the Scorch effect, which continuously deals burning damage over 40 seconds.

This is an excellent way to provide supplemental damage to your target, especially in the second phase, wherein Hecate completely shields herself from all other forms of damage. Although boons are completely randomized, watch for Flame Flourish, Flame Strike, and Slow Cooker.

If you receive either Hestia or Zeus boons early on, look for Daedalus Hammer upgrades on your way to the Hecate fight. Upgrading Scorch abilities should be your priority.

Aside from Hestia, Zeus has the second-best boons for this fight. Boons with the Blitz status effect are particularly useful, especially for those still learning the game or prone to taking damage. Blitz allows you to get some level of retribution when taking damage.

Heaven Strike, for example, deals 80 lightning damage for every 120 damage Melinoe sustains. This might prove invaluable, considering how many projectiles and AoE attacks come at you in Hecate’s fight. Although the goal is to take as little damage as possible, Blitz is a great way to ensure no damage received is wasted.

Best Weapon For Beating Hecate

At this point in the story, you likely have access to a few weapons. The Sister Blades, Lim, and Oros are the best weapons in Hades 2 to take down Hecate. Compared to the Witches Staff, which Melinoe starts with, the Sister Blades are much faster and can release more strikes in a shorter period.

The Omega version of the basic attack is also much more beneficial in this fight specifically, as it positions Melinoe directly behind her targets. Also, in the second and third phases of the fight, the Sister Blades’ special attack can deal with large groups of enemies much more easily.

Regarding Keepsakes, it’s best to give your first Nectar to Nemesis. Although prickly towards Melinoe, Nemesis’ Evil Eye is an incredible asset if you often die to Hecate. This Keepsake increases the damage to the specific boss or mob type that ended your previous run.

If you can make it to Hecate again, you’ll find that this fight becomes significantly easier with a damage buff. Weapons are ultimately about playstyle preference in Hades 2, but it is best to gain mastery of all weapons to make yourself a much more versatile player.
