Black Mirror Season 7 Gets Major Production Update From Creator

Summary Creator Charlie Brooker shares a promising production update on Black Mirror season 7, confirming filming is already halfway through.

The new season is set to be comprised of six episodes, including a sequel to the fan-favorite "USS Callister", though casting details remain a mystery for the episode.

Brooker also teased that the team is doing something else for the show they've "never done before", though remains mum on any information for it.

With nearly a year gone since it was last released, Black Mirror season 7 has gotten a promising production update from creator Charlie Brooker. The Emmy-winning series has been seen as a modern version of The Twilight Zone, combining shocking twists with contemporary fears. Season 6, which released in Summer 2023, received solid reviews from critics and mixed reviews from audiences, and sported a talented cast which included Salma Hayek Pinault, Kate Mara, and Aaron Paul. Paul’s episode, “Beyond the Sea”, became an instant classic with its poignant themes and brutal ending.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Black Mirror creator Brooker said that season 7 of the series is currently in the middle of production, having just wrapped on the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved season 4 opener, “USS Callister.” Brooker speaks to the mad nature of filming television, saying that, as he finishes one episode, he’s shooting the next and prepping another. At the end of the day, however, Brooker says that he enjoys the “fun pressure” and says it’s a nice job. Read his full conversation with THR below:

But you aren’t putting out a Red Mirror season of bleak horror dystopia. Not just yet, no. We’re in mid-production [on season seven] at the moment, and it’s all quite mad right now. We’re at the point where you finish some of the episodes, and you are shooting another one, and prepping another one. They’re all different, all with different directors and casts. So this is the point where my head is a bit … I’m under a lot of fun pressure. It’s a nice job to have, at the end of the day. Can you tease any of the other themes or episodes in season seven? I’d love to. But I’m pretty sure I can’t or shouldn’t. There’s so much I could say. I think I can say that we just wrapped on 'Callister,' and we’ve just started on another one. I’m really excited. I’m always excited about all of them, but I think we have a really good mix. I’m about to start writing the last one, which actually is terrifying because I probably should have written it several weeks ago! We have a real mix of things, really exciting castings that have happened. I don’t want to jinx it by saying too much. We’re in the bit that I really like, where you’ve locked an episode, so that’s such a good feeling. We’re doing the final polishing of the score and the mix on one of them. And we are doing something really cool right now that we’ve never done before — but I can’t say what it is.

What to Expect from Black Mirror Season 7

Black Mirror saw a gap between seasons 5 and 6 due to the pandemic, but with that mostly out of the way, season 7 has seen considerable progress since its announcement. There will be six new episodes in the season, including a sequel to the fan-favorite “USS Callister.” In this episode, considered one of the series’ best, Breaking Bad breakout star Jesse Plemons played a game developer named Robert Daly who’s created a Star Trek-like adventure experience for clones of his coworkers he’s created. In familiar Black Mirror nature, the technological feat turns awry.

Netflix teases that Daly is indeed dead, but the problems for the crew of the USS Callister have just begun. Viewers could expect a whole new, possibly perilous, adventure for the crew. As for the rest of the episodes of season 7, audiences should expect the usual bells and whistles that come with a Black Mirror episode, featuring edgy, usually timely and sometimes prophetic, technological advances and surprising twists and turns.
